Studiously Uncool: December 2014
http://julessearchforvirtue.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 31, 2014. I got a comment from a Sairy Camp this morning. It was just someone pushing a porn site so I deleted it. But I love that name. It comes, of course, from Dickens' alcoholic nurse Sairey Gamp. It's the perfect name for a spammer. Links to this post. Wednesday, December 24, 2014. How can you want to be enslaved to them again? You are observing special days, and months, and seasons and years. I'm afraid my work for you may have been wasted. (Galatians 4:8-11). Links to this post.

Studiously Uncool: April 2015
http://julessearchforvirtue.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Tuesday, April 28, 2015. I'm going to take a bit of different tack on my second post on "Time and Life". In just a few weeks, the show will be over and no one will talk about it anymore. For me, this show was the only one of the supposed TV golden age that actually resonated. Why? I think the answer to that is bigger than the show itself. Okay, but is that really a problem? It might be in some cases but there are others where the readers' take on a text may be more profound than the writer intended.

Studiously Uncool: The missing part of the Ashley Madison scandal
http://julessearchforvirtue.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-missing-part-of-ashley-madison.html
Tuesday, July 21, 2015. The missing part of the Ashley Madison scandal. I take it no one is feeling a lot of empathy for Ashley Madison or its subscribers? It's not a business model I want to defend. And yet, there is something rather troubling about the recent threats against the company. To be precise, there are two troubling things about it. Those two things are related. Here is an interesting line from the statement the hackers released:. What if they came after you? Alasdair MacIntyre reminds us tha...

Thursday, February 26, 2015. Manly Thor's Day special: Why should my liberty be subject to the judgment of someone else's conscience? Here are some lines from 1 Corinthians 10. Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience, 26. For "the earth and its fullness are the Lord's. 27. If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 28. Eat whatever is so...

Studiously Uncool: Brideshead 1
http://julessearchforvirtue.blogspot.com/p/brideshead-revisited.html
Almost five years ago now, I blogged my way through. Brideshead Revisited starting in Advent and continuing on into the new year after Christmas. It was not meant to be, and is not, an academic exercise. I simply went through a book I had known and loved for a few decades and explained how I understood the text. The response has been gratifying. At least one person has come here and read their way through these posts every single day since I first published these. And so the Season of Brideshead begins.

Studiously Uncool: Smooth Song of the Day: "innocence" hidden in plain sight
http://julessearchforvirtue.blogspot.com/2015/07/smooth-song-of-day-innocence-hidden-in.html
Friday, July 10, 2015. Smooth Song of the Day: "innocence" hidden in plain sight. Not much needs to be said about this one. It's a love song and it would be one giant cliché from beginning to end except that it's about an adulterous affair. Mrs. Jones is a married woman. You listen to it and it all sounds so innocent. And you know it isn't. And yet . Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Uncool quote of the moment. View my complete profile. What is a crypto-catholic libertine anyway? The Art of Manliness.

Thursday, November 27, 2014. A scout's virtues: cheerfulness. Sentimentality is sentiment that is inappropriate for the object or situation or a sentiment that is not directed at anything at all. Isn't "cheerfulness", then, nothing but sentimentality? In this instance, those who turn to the 1911 Boy Scout's Handbook. Hoping to find an account of virtue from before the rot set in are going to be disappointed. This is the rank sentimentality:. Consider the routine question, "How are you? Because the second...

Sunday, November 29, 2009. Wow, I can't believe that I haven't posted on here since April! But, I got busy with selling my Ohio home, having an auction to get rid of stuff, moving permanently to Sanibel, Florida and settling in here, spending time with my other blog, Sand Between My Toes, and getting hooked on Facebook. Ok, so much for the excuses. My nieces and daughter felt the same way. One of them mentioned that many of the Brooks men were good looking. OK, so some were and some weren't! Oh yeah, the...
