melissa brandman photography: How Does It Work?
http://thelensflare.blogspot.com/2008/12/how-does-it-work.html
Thursday, December 4, 2008. How Does It Work? I figure we should start from the beginning - how exactly does a camera work? So enough of the explanations, let's get some answers. I researched a bunch of websites for the most coherent answer, and I liked this one. Let’s say you spot your dolphin and lift your camera to your eye. What happens? The dolphin is swimming just below the water, but you have a feeling it’s about to surface. Wait for it, wait for it…there! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Check...

melissa brandman photography: Kauai (b+w)
http://thelensflare.blogspot.com/2009/11/kauai-bw.html
Monday, November 2, 2009. I have to admit - I did not stay true to the assignment and shoot these in black and white - I shot in color and converted to black and white. It's hard to resist all the vibrant colors you see in Kauai.I'll be posting more photos in color later this week. We had a wonderful time, but it's good to be home. PS I have no idea what was up with the car-turned-scrap-metal at the beach. Gives a whole new meaning to "beach clean up day"). November 2, 2009 at 6:23 PM. How a camera works.

melissa brandman photography: camera lenses - a primer
http://thelensflare.blogspot.com/2009/03/lens-primer.html
Thursday, March 12, 2009. Camera lenses - a primer. For a more detailed explanation). So now that a "normal" lens has been established, let's talk about some other lenses. This chart illustrates the amount of area in front of your camera at various focal lengths. Wide angle provides a greater field of vision than what our eyes see. There are, generally speaking, 3 types of wide angle lenses (note these are film focal lengths - these will vary with digital lenses):. 24 mm - 35 mm. 17 mm - 21 mm. Portrait ...

http://thelensflare.blogspot.com/2009/11/happy-early-anniversaryto-myself.html
Sunday, November 8, 2009. Happy Early Anniversary.to Myself. It's hard to believe that Lens Flare/melissa brandman photography is almost a year old. So, I'm celebrating with a brand new blog! To check it out. The new and improved blog gives me greater flexibility to share my photos with you, and is a nice compliment to my website (in my humble opinion, anyway). I'm still working on spicing up the new blog, but I couldn't wait to share it with you. Come on over and check out my shoot with Alice Rose!

melissa brandman photography: exposure triangle
http://thelensflare.blogspot.com/2009/04/back-to-basics-exposure-triangle.html
Thursday, April 23, 2009. During a break in the photo shoot for alice rose. Send me an email if you have an opinion on that) I figured now is a good time to review the basics of photography again. But first, an analogy:. The "exposure triangle" is comprised of: (1) aperture, (2) shutter speed, and (3) ISO. You can click here. Digital Photography School has a good article. April 24, 2009 at 8:27 PM. This post actually helped me learn a little more about ISO. I was trying to take a shot of something ou...

melissa brandman photography: Kauai - The Local Flavor
http://thelensflare.blogspot.com/2009/11/kauai-local-flavor.html
Wednesday, November 4, 2009. Kauai - The Local Flavor. We thought we were pretty clever, dining on street faire in such an exotic locale, that is until we woke up the next day feeling a little funny. So on our first full day in Kauai we decided to trek on over to Hanapepe, Kauai's "biggest little town" for their weekly art show, complete with street vendors and live music:. Main Street, Hanapepe. That's Westside Smitty - more pics of him later. Westside Smitty on the harmonica and slide guitar.

melissa brandman photography: camera modes 101
http://thelensflare.blogspot.com/2009/06/camera-modes-101.html
Thursday, June 18, 2009. Image courtesy of information addicts. This is a question I get a lot, although I suspect many of you don't want to ask it via email/comments: how do I use the other camera modes? As you can see in the photo above, there are several modes (most likely) on your SLR. For purposes of keeping this post light and polite, I won't review the other automatic settings now. ( Click here. Aperture Priority (A or AV). Shutter Priority (S or TV). Manual mode allows you full control over the c...

melissa brandman photography: what is ISO?
http://thelensflare.blogspot.com/2009/07/what-is-iso.html
Thursday, July 16, 2009. In looking back at some of my previous posts, I realized I never did a proper post on ISO. And since ISO is part three of the light trifecta if you will, it's time to give ISO its due. So why can't you just leave your ISO on auto setting? You can, but you will surely run into lighting conditions that will not be properly exposed unless you change your ISO setting. Remember the exposure triangle. On the various ISO settings:. Cloudy day, overcast. Noise may start showing. No, I...

melissa brandman photography: what is shutter speed? (revisited)
http://thelensflare.blogspot.com/2009/07/what-is-shutter-speed-revisited.html
Thursday, July 9, 2009. What is shutter speed? In my post on aperture (revisited). I mentioned there are three ways to control the amount of light entering your camera. Today's lesson focuses on shutter speed. Aperture is, in layman's terms, the mechanism that controls how much light enters the camera. Shutter speed is how long the shutter stays open before it closes and the image is captured. Confused? The amount of time the shutters stay open, the more light enters the camera. So why is this important?
