brave new lunch: Baked Potatoes
http://bravenewlunch.blogspot.com/2010/11/baked-potatoes.html
Monday, November 15, 2010. Baked potatoes are a wonderful, hearty school lunch food for the winter months. Preschoolers and adults like them, and they can be dressed up in so many ways to make a fun meal. Our salad bar morphs into a baked potato bar for the day, and I’ve found that it’s been very easy to upgrade the fixins:. Last year, defrosted chopped broccoli. This year, fresh, chopped broccoli, blanched, and bright green. Last year, sour cream. Last year, dried powder chives. This year, no foil (.

Tuesday, May 25, 2010. Model School Food Program in Marblehead. I know there are schools that cook meals from scratch in their own kitchens. Last week, I finally saw such a school first-hand. Laura De Santis, Nutrition Director at the Marblehead Community Charter Public School in Marblehead, MA let me spend a day with her and her staff. Same goes for the dessert made with whole grain oats and fresh blueberries. I asked Laura, “What’s the best way to get kids to buy into the lunch program? Out of a French...

Monday, February 21, 2011. Homemade mac n’ cheese for 500. My kitchen is serving homemade macaroni and cheese for the whole school this Thursday. I thought it would be informative to share the process by which a menu item is transformed from thaw and serve to homemade. I based my recipe off of one from the Massachusetts Farm to School Project cookbook. Will students approve of the new homemade macaroni and cheese? Stay tuned for a post about Thursday's meal! brave new lunch: June 2010

Wednesday, June 30, 2010. Wouldn't smoothies be a wonderful snack option at school, especially when the days are still warm? Smoothies can be packed with ingredient rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and protein. They're perfect for a quick break. I made a smoothie 2 weeks ago to “test” it out, and I enjoyed it so much I’ve had one almost everyday since. Links to this post. Friday, June 25, 2010. Bring your family to one of the pick-your-own-farms in Massachusetts (or wherever you live) this summer–...

Monday, March 7, 2011. Getting a better burger to school. On my top ten list of things to replace on my school lunch menu is our burgers. Of course, it’s hard to replace the thaw-and-serve version – it’s inexpensive, easy to prepare, and kids generally like it. Last spring, I heard that a nearby school district is serving antibiotic and hormone-free burgers traceable to local farms. I was very much intrigued. It turns out the food service director works with a local fast food chain, b.good. While B.g...

What are my kids eating?: December 2010
http://graysonandharper.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Monday, December 20, 2010. Quickie snow day lunch. We had a snow day last week, and I wasn't prepared to be at home with the kids - even the bread I had was stale! We made do with a nice, hot lunch on the fly! Grilled turkey and cheese on whole wheat and black beans mixed with salsa and chili powder. Posted by Kelly B. Links to this post. Thursday, December 16, 2010. Slogan = Meat Your Vegetables. Need I say more? Posted by Kelly B. Links to this post. Friday, December 10, 2010. Holiday Dinner with Harper.

Thursday, May 19, 2011. Berry Berry Kix.who knew? I was browsing the cereal aisle in Walmart last week when I happened to find Berry Berry Kix - hadn't seen them in years! Apparently, it is very new back on the market, because I don't see it listed on the Kix Web site. It is also improved (in my opinion)! The ingredients are simple, and they don't use artificial colors/flavors! You can tell the cereal has a very natural berry color, not a fluorescent glow. My kids LOVED it! Posted by Kelly B. What are my kids eating?: Who buys this stuff?
http://graysonandharper.blogspot.com/2011/05/who-buys-this-stuff.html
Tuesday, May 17, 2011. Who buys this stuff? While at the grocery store the other day, I noticed a section of candy themed "juice" drinks in the juice box section. I don't understand why any parent would purchase what appears to be liquid candy for their kids to consume, especially when there are perfectly delicious 100% juice boxes available in the same section for a comparable price. I don't know a single child who doesn't enjoy real juice! My rant for the day.carry on! Posted by Kelly B.

What are my kids eating?: Berry Delicious!

Friday, May 6, 2011. Just hand me my cheesy title award.I gladly accept! If you're in the Southeast and haven't done so already, you need to RUN, not walk, to the nearest strawberry field and get some local berries! A lot of places will let you pick your own, which is so much fun for the kids, and a great way to teach them about local produce and the way crops grow. This is what a good strawberry looks like on. The inside - just as red as the outside! Posted by Kelly B. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Tuesday, November 30, 2010. Don't toss the peels! It is clementine season! I just bought a BIG crate of them for $5 at the grocery store, and the kids love them because they can peel them themselves and they have no seeds. It might not look pretty, but it smells so good! Posted by Kelly B. Links to this post. Friday, November 26, 2010. Https:/ www.dynomighty.com/user/wayoflight/. Honey, I Bought a Farm. That’s right – I bought a farm. But more on that in a minute. First, I’d like to explore how I got here…. The thing about retiring in your 30’s is that you have a lot of time on your hands. And the thing about having a lot of time on your hands is that it gives you a lot of new time to think about serious things, like life, family, priorities, and culture. And all that thinking, if you’re wired like me. Back to me and my farm…. In my st...

Sunday, August 21, 2011. Farm to School Fair. Pat Lanni of Lanni Orchards in Lunenberg, MA speaking to a student. While most schools were on summer break this past July, the Perkins School for the Blind in Somerville, MA was still in session and held it’s first Farm-To-School fair. Mr Watmough certainly did things a bit differently. He was the geography teacher at my school in Bournemouth back in the 1960s. He doubled as the school’s second-tier, hands-off rugby coach who never once actually played any rugby, and tripled as the drama teacher for the boys who’d chosen drama as their ‘special subject’. Then his jacket caught fire.
