HAMMER & THONGS: THE CAMP ON BLOOD ISLAND (Val Guest, 1958)
http://hammerfilmreviews.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-camp-on-blood-island-val-guest-1958.html
Thursday, June 13, 2013. THE CAMP ON BLOOD ISLAND (Val Guest, 1958). A stolid group of British POWs must contain an explosive secret from their captors or suffer the fallout. Val Guest directs this grimy sweat-house potboiler with a straightforward capacity of violent perception, as the ignoble Japanese soldiers are relegated to brutal masters without humanity, an insufferable truth averred to by survivors. HAMMER & THONGS: THE SNORKEL (Guy Green, 1958)
http://hammerfilmreviews.blogspot.com/2011/09/snorkel-guy-green-1958.html
Wednesday, September 7, 2011. THE SNORKEL (Guy Green, 1958). A killer lurks beneath the surface of suspicion, breathing air in a noxious environment of murderous intentions. Director Guy Green balances a thrilling story with beautiful compositions, tightening the improbable machinations of murder and teenage angst into a suspension of disbelief. Green was the cinematographer for David Lean's first two films GREAT EXPECTATIONS. Written in blood by. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Spine# 460Simon stand...

http://hammerfilmreviews.blogspot.com/2010/07/blood-from-mummys-tomb-seth-holt-1971.html
Saturday, July 24, 2010. BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY'S TOMB (Seth Holt, 1971). Prof Fuchs gives his daughter an ancient ring for her birthday, taken from the severed hand of the perfectly preserved “mummy” who sleeps the sleep of undeath in his locked chambers: a mere scientific anomaly requiring his analytical skills or something more? Or is he a pawn to supernatural powers, kinetic forces beyond his understanding? Written in blood by. July 25, 2010 at 8:55 AM. July 25, 2010 at 11:10 AM. Sang-hyun has fled the...

HAMMER & THONGS: YESTERDAY'S ENEMY (Val Guest, 1959)
http://hammerfilmreviews.blogspot.com/2011/05/yesterdays-enemy-val-guest-1959.html
Sunday, May 8, 2011. YESTERDAY'S ENEMY (Val Guest, 1959). A group of British soldiers slog through the swamp, their morality strangled by the thick jungle and the unfortunes of war. Val Guest directs this gritty and brutal story of a British Captain and his maddening dilemma, a man who decides that there is no justification in war…only means to an end. The Japanese commander is shown without prejudice, a soldier who must extract information from Langford in the same way Langford had to interrogate the sy...

HAMMER & THONGS: PREHISTORIC WOMEN (Michael Carreras, 1967)

Sunday, October 23, 2011. PREHISTORIC WOMEN (Michael Carreras, 1967). Or a subversive metaphor about the fall of British Imperialism? Or could it reflect the fear of interracial marriage and racist propaganda? Written in blood by. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Alex DeLarge blogs on classic films at The Korova Theatre. Friendly and unpretentious, Alex has a soft bloody spot in his heart for Hammer Studios and has decided to create another blog focusing primarily on their arcane productions. Son of S...

Yvonne Monlaur Official blog: juin 2010

Mardi 15 juin 2010. Before leaving you for a few weeks of holidays, I wished to draw your attention to the “Save Bray Studios” petition. While reading Robert J.E. Simpson’s blog (one of my blog followers), I learned (and deplored) that the current owners of the famous studios had decided to turn the lot into apartments for sale. Bray studios seemed to run in slow motion for some time. Unable to provide the necessary funds to renew the technical equipment, they decided to pull the plug on its activities.

HAMMER & THONGS: TASTE OF FEAR (Seth Holt, 1961)
http://hammerfilmreviews.blogspot.com/2013/07/taste-of-fear-seth-holt-1961.html
Sunday, July 21, 2013. TASTE OF FEAR (Seth Holt, 1961). US Title: SCREAM OF FEAR. Penny is seemingly a young girl whose thoughts are worth a great deal more than a copper cent, her dexterous mind imprisoned in a crippled tomb of flesh and bone. Seth Holt directs a deft little thriller whose labyrinthine twists led through a Gothic mansion of murderous intent and end upon the crashing surf. The narrative is awash with red herrings but remember: in water, no one can hear you scream! Written in blood by.

HAMMER & THONGS: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (Terence Fisher, 1962)
http://hammerfilmreviews.blogspot.com/2014/08/the-phantom-of-opera-terence-fisher-1962.html
Monday, August 4, 2014. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (Terence Fisher, 1962). Hammer’s rather dull and boorish remake of the classic Universal 1943 version invokes more violence and bloodletting but excises romance and sentimentality to bring the whole affair to a yawning conclusion. Never mind that Joan of Arc wasn’t canonized in 1900) and is solidly staged and acted with grand designs and bombastic score: it is often more interesting the story we’re watching! There is no explanation forthcoming for this act...
