Life of Brettanicus: March 2013
http://brettanicus.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
A creative journal to explore ideas, discover characters, imagine anything. Saturday, March 30, 2013. Minnesota Winter of our Discontent. Photo by Paul L Dineen. But this very trauma that is our winter makes artists of us all. What else do we have to do with our mornings and evenings than to introspect, to read a book or go down to the basement with guitar or paints? Thursday, March 21, 2013. Rev Robert Kirk - The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns, and Faeries. Sunday, March 10, 2013. Minnesota Winter ...
Life of Brettanicus: Bixby Had to Go
http://brettanicus.blogspot.com/2014/05/filial-postmortem-and-sunday-dinner.html
A creative journal to explore ideas, discover characters, imagine anything. Saturday, May 17, 2014. Bixby Had to Go. Problem was, Bixby held in a safe deposit box the will that bequeathed him the family estate, bestowed upon him not by his father but by his father before him, by good ol’ granddad. Maybe my father was trying to take me. Out of the lineup. Perhaps this was his final fuck-you in face of these past ten or so years, when I finally gained the upper hand during his infirmity. Or had. Life of Brettanicus: January 2014
http://brettanicus.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
A creative journal to explore ideas, discover characters, imagine anything. Sunday, January 12, 2014. Penance by Sea - The Freighter. I’m on this tanker out in the middle of the ocean. I’ve gone from living in a Midwestern rambler to this iron maiden floating on the sea. The ocean tries to drown us every day. We slice through swells forty to fifty feet high, and when the calm comes, it feels like a momentary reprieve from the wrath of an angry mother. Why am I out here? Sunday, January 05, 2014. I left b...

Life of Brettanicus: I Am Not Me
http://brettanicus.blogspot.com/2013/11/i-am-not-me.html
A creative journal to explore ideas, discover characters, imagine anything. Saturday, November 09, 2013. I Am Not Me. Photo by Fran Carneros. How is it that my greatest clarity comes when I wake up in the middle of the night and know with a certainty that I am wasting my life? All of those fire drills at the office, demand management and value proposition; work for work’s sake with outcomes that will be forgotten in a year’s time. Those women of the court? So what if I can’t escape myself anymore? I like...

Scribbler's Cafe: un*snap* judgement
http://kelsye.blogspot.com/2007/02/unsnap-judgement.html
Monday, February 12, 2007. Kiomye and I are taking the train to Osaka. It's already 6pm and we're both tired out from our days at work and school, but we don't care. We want to get O-U-T. The man standing on the platform behind us reeks of alcohol. The smell oozes from his rumpled clothes, from his hot breath on my ear, from his very pores. Kiomye steps forward to peer down the empty tracks. He says. It's dangerous. I pull her back behind the yellow line and thank him for his concern. He rambles along in...

Thursday, September 21, 2006. Be patient (unlike me). But, no more diamonds for me. I'm back in the reality of gradebooks, wrinkled homework papers and cold cups of coffee. Now this is glam. Scribbler's Cafe: Time to wake up
http://kelsye.blogspot.com/2007/01/time-to-wake-up.html
Monday, January 08, 2007. Time to wake up. The moment, Kiomye and I are dining at the florist's café. There is running water, opera music played at a perfect level, and the overwhelming scent of flowers from the floral arrangement class taking place behind the paper screen. I love this place. I've had a crush on the waiter forever. He takes Kio by her hand and leads her around the shop. She always leaves with a pink rose or two tucked into her pockets. The Most Beautiful Woman in Town. Scribbler's Cafe: Peeking into secrets
http://kelsye.blogspot.com/2006/08/peeking-into-secrets.html
Sunday, August 27, 2006. I stole this book from my sister's collection to read on the plane back. This is a PERFECT airplane book. It's so engrossing and fast-paced that I actually was annoyed when the flight attendant would interrupt me to give me fruit snacks and drinks. Chuck Palahniuk also wrote "Fight Club" and this book is full of the same intensity and mystery. Except it is entirely different. Posted by Scribbler @ Sunday, August 27, 2006. Links to this post:. Scribbler's Cafe: Under the Japanese sun
http://kelsye.blogspot.com/2006/09/under-japanese-sun.html
Sunday, September 03, 2006. Under the Japanese sun. Kiomye and I were treated to a trip to the country yesterday by my friend Megumi. Megumi was in the English class I used to teach at the local community center and has been wonderful about keeping in touch and acting as host to her country. She drove us (along with her two kids Masaki and Miki) out to Tanba to pick grapes and kiwis on her parent's land. Why do words that are spelled exactly the same sound different? Uhhhh blink blink blink. And nodded h...
Scribbler's Cafe: Extended disconnect
http://kelsye.blogspot.com/2006/08/extended-disconnect.html
Tuesday, August 22, 2006. It's amazing how a month-long vacation can fly by in the blink of an eye. We had some family drama. Just one day into our camping trip, we got a call on the cell that my grandfather had had a heart attack and was at the hospital in critical condition. My mom, Kio and I cut our trip short, jumped on a ferry to hurry to our family across the Sound and spent the next four days at the hospital. I hate when I can't see everyone I promised to. Please forgive me, friends. Some of this ...

Monday, May 31, 2004. Academic vs. Intellectual. My teacher then asked us which we aim for in our writings. We all agreed that an intellectual is a much slicker thing to be. We sat around for a while talking about how much cooler intellectuals are than academics. Why must it be either/or? Are there only serious writers and fluff writers. Can’t I be a serious writer who also enjoys fluff? If my writings are not entirely intellectual or high art , does that mean they are insignificant and low? The house is...
