Brew Blues

Sunday, April 10, 2011. Another attempt at an IPA. I keep following advice that I do not want. This will end up as a nice Amber Ale. Different malt combination. Different hop combination. It will be a much different beer. The hop character still has not struck as much as I would have hoped. Here's how it was built. 18 kg Muntons IPA bitter malt extract. 15kg Black Rock amber malt extract. 500g light brew malt brew improver. 500g crystal malt medium grain. 25g Chinook hop pellets. 25g Amarillo hop pellets.

Brew Blues: Dave's IPA

http://www.brewblues.blogspot.com/2011/02/daves-ipa_27.html

Sunday, February 27, 2011. It's done. Bottled. Secondary fermentation. It's weighed in at a healthy 7.0% ABV and is tasting nice and hoppy. If anything, going by the taste immediately after fermentation it is lacking a little bit of body so I will change the malt structure the next time that I do another IPA. I'll use different hops too, so really it will be totally different. Why don't I wait to sample it properly after the secondary fermentation to make my judgement? Get two more fermenters?

Brew Blues: Dave's Pale Ale

http://www.brewblues.blogspot.com/2011/02/daves-pale-ale_16.html

Wednesday, February 16, 2011. Next update to the pale ale brew, I know you've all been on tenterhooks waiting to hear. So far so good. Just bottled the lot and they are on the second fermentation. I sampled one as it was being bottled and it didn't kill me instantly, which I took as a very promising sign. Straight out of the fermenter it tastes fairly decent so after some maturation I think it might be half decent. Stay tuned. If you want, that is. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Brew Blues: Dave's Pale Ale

http://www.brewblues.blogspot.com/2011/02/daves-pale-ale_21.html

Monday, February 21, 2011. The pleasantly mediocre Pale Ale. Let's not get excited about it, this was a pure packet pale ale. No ground breaking ideas, and no hops! No hops for goodness sake! I don't know what I was thinking. Anyway, we'll put that elementary error behind us for now. The ale is only two weeks in the bottle but it seems like a reasonable time to give it a spin to make sure it isn't poisonous or spoiled or anything toxic like that. Let's give it a month or so and see how it matures.

Brew Blues: Dave's IPA

http://www.brewblues.blogspot.com/2011/02/daves-ipa.html

Friday, February 18, 2011. Now we're getting somewhere. This one is going to be more interesting. Whether or not it's any good will remain to be seen, but due to the modifications made I am sure it will be more interesting. Hops, my friends. Hops. Well, there are some other changes. Twice the malt as well, some grain. But it's the hops that will really separate this from the last. Hops in the wort, dry hopping. It's turned up to eleven, man. Rock 'n Roll, son. (and daughter, I guess).

Brew Views: Red Rackham

http://brewviews.blogspot.com/2011/12/red-rackham.html

Sunday, December 18, 2011. Yeastie Boys - Belgian Red Ale 6.8% ABV. I know I haven’t shut up about the Red Rackham since I tried it, but I’ll get this out of the way and then be done with it. Here we have one of the new offerings from our buddies from across the Tasman, and it’s a very interesting installation to the growing range of Yeastie Boys beers. So, why did pirates bury their treasure? And what if the map fell into the hands of some young upstart adventurer? Correct me if I’m wrong. The tongue is...

Brew Views: 8 Wired Hop Wired

http://brewviews.blogspot.com/2011/04/8-wired-hop-wired.html

Sunday, April 17, 2011. 8 Wired Hop Wired. India Pale Ale - 7.3% ABV. Hopheads of the craft beer world, take note. This beer is the hopheads dream. The dream, I tell you! Okay, I know. The Brew Views has been pretty 8 Wired heavy lately, but can you really blame me? Blame 8 Wired if anyone! Stop making such lovely, hoppy beers! And blame Slowbeer for making them so accessible and affordable! 8 Wired have done it again. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). From Beer to Eternity. 8 Wired Hop Wired.

Brew Views: April 2011

http://brewviews.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Friday, April 22, 2011. 2011 Harvest Pale Ale - 4.6% ABV. I'm a big fan of Bridge Rd, their Beechworth Pale Ale is one of the most dangerously sessionable beers I've ever encountered, while the Bling IPA is a bruiser of a hop heavyweight, a curry just doesn't taste the same without being accompanied by one. So I expected great things when I ordered the 2011 Harvest. It did not disappoint. Such is beer indeed. Sunday, April 17, 2011. 8 Wired Hop Wired. India Pale Ale - 7.3% ABV. Blame 8 Wired if anyone!

Brew Views: Epic/Thornbridge Stout

http://brewviews.blogspot.com/2011/04/epicthornbridge-stout.html

Friday, April 8, 2011. After sitting down with Master Dave and Master Rorz at Beer Deluxe on Showcase Wednesday, knocking back Thornbridge Brewery's latest international collaboration. Tough to say, it certainly doesn't have the novelty, genius and flair of the Goat, but it feels like a much more solid and consistent competitor. Like a Luke Hodge to Thorny Goat's Buddy Franklin. Brew Views: Torpedo

http://brewviews.blogspot.com/2011/06/torpedo.html

Wednesday, June 22, 2011. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. - American IPA 7.2% ABV. Let’s start with the name. You know I dig names that are apt for the beer. This is no exception. A torpedo is long and sleek,. Spectacular and can cause great damage. A balanced 7.2% ABV Extra IPA with explosive hop character as a sessionable beer makes this extremely dangerous. Like a torpedo, if you didn’t already pick up on that. Torpedos can sink ships as well, but I can’t draw any analogies to this beer for that point.

Brew Views: Beelzebub's Jewels

http://brewviews.blogspot.com/2011/05/beelzebubs-jewels.html

Sunday, May 1, 2011. Holgate Brewhouse - Belgian Quadrupel 12% ABV. Where do you begin with a beer like this? Oh, I know. I'll be begin by promising that I will not make any jokes or any testicular reference to Lucifer. But how to enjoy such a beer? Candle lit dinner (which would probably mean sharing with someone who is entirely undeserving)? Compared to some other Belgian Style Dubbels and Tripels? So many tough questions (though really just one question.). The beer itself pours like a sticky dream (no...

Brew Views: Ruination

http://brewviews.blogspot.com/2011/12/ruination.html

Tuesday, December 20, 2011. Stone Brewing Company - Double IPA 7.7% ABV. Holy hell, I’m in heaven. Juxtaposition. Heaven and hell. Yeah, I went there. This is the hopheads dream. So good. Sentence length reducingly good. Straight to the beer! Spoiler alert: Hops feature heavily in this beer. I can hardly imagine a better beer to go to when it’s a good fix of hops that you require. Obtaining this beer down in little Australia might be tough, but it’s oh so worth it. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Brew Views: The Thorny Goat

http://brewviews.blogspot.com/2011/03/thorny-goat.html

Friday, March 18, 2011. Thornbridge Brewery / Mountain Goat Collaboration - Black IPA 6.8% ABV. This is such a highly anticipated beer for me that it would be basically impossible for this beer to live up to the expectations. This lived up to all expectations. And then some. Immediately the look of the beer is pitch black. As black as any porter or stout you will see, yet the aroma and first taste will lead down a whole other path. So many hop flavours come through! Good times be a comin’, friends.
