London Craft Beer Festival 2016: a review — Brewing East
http://www.brewingeast.com/home/2016/8/16/londoncraftbeerfestival2016
Learning lager and appreciating ale in East London. London Craft Beer Festival 2016: a review. Last week, I recounted. At the London Beer City 2016 opening party. This set a convivial tone for the ten day event and it was only befitting that it concluded on equal terms. Enter the London Craft Beer Festival. Sponsored an entire Cask Yard- and a pop-up bottle shop from Beer Merchants. Glorious summer weather persisted throughout the weekend with temperatures lingering in the low-to-mid twenties well into t...
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia: local beer emerging from the darkness — Brewing East
http://www.brewingeast.com/home/2016/10/3/dartmouth
Learning lager and appreciating ale in East London. Dartmouth, Nova Scotia: local beer emerging from the darkness. Separated by the Halifax Harbour, Halifax and Dartmouth might mirror each other geographically, but have discrete personalities. Brewing local with room for expansion. The 2016 list has yet to be finalised, but many of these venues haven’t been operating long enough for consideration in previous years. Alongside the Rockbottom Brewpub. Located beneath the main bar. Finally, the nano brewerie...
Shelburne, Nova Scotia: Boxing Rock is rolling with the punches — Brewing East
http://www.brewingeast.com/home/2016/9/26/boxingrock
Learning lager and appreciating ale in East London. Shelburne, Nova Scotia: Boxing Rock is rolling with the punches. Boxing Rock Brewing Co. Takes its moniker from a local maritime legend in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. But even their core beers are unconventional. Given the breakneck speed that everything seems to be changing across the industry, a sense of continuity is novel and welcome. But don't expect the same stability reflected in their beer- it's guaranteed that the styles and iterations coming f...
2016 in review: Goose Island LDN party and Bourbon County launch — Brewing East
http://www.brewingeast.com/home/2016/12/9/2016-gooseisland
Learning lager and appreciating ale in East London. 2016 in review: Goose Island LDN party and Bourbon County launch. Given that the amount of breweries in London currently hovers around 80, there’s no scarcity of occasions to attend, whether it’s attending a launch or accessing a range of beers from a much lauded brewery from outside the city - from Bristol, Manchester or even further afield. It’s been a tremendous year for beer events. Simply put, there just isn’t enough time to divulge them all. The r...
2016 in review: The new East London pub crawl — Brewing East
http://www.brewingeast.com/home/2016/12/21/2016-review-pubs
Learning lager and appreciating ale in East London. 2016 in review: The new East London pub crawl. Yes, 2016 has been an exhilarating year on a number of fronts. Following from last week’s post on two events. That didn’t make the Brewing East editorial cut, there’s still more to chuck into the ring. One of the most significant triumphs this year has been the growing list of new places to find beer in East London. Homerton and Limehouse hosted two prodigious openings this month alone. Who serve up legenda...

Tandleman's Beer Blog: Do We Like That One?
http://tandlemanbeerblog.blogspot.com/2015/07/do-we-like-that-one.html
Tandleman's Random and Particular Thoughts on Beer. Monday, 27 July 2015. Do We Like That One? I'm not a drinker of own brand beers really. I kind of think they are likely to be not very good with one or two exceptions. These exceptions are usually where a very good brewery has been commissioned to produce a particular kind of beer as part of a range. But what about those low end "cooking lagers" which aren't brands, but are set up to compete with "brands"? First up was Galahad Lager. Gives every impress...

Tandleman's Beer Blog: Bass in the Sun
http://tandlemanbeerblog.blogspot.com/2015/06/bass-in-sun.html
Tandleman's Random and Particular Thoughts on Beer. Monday, 15 June 2015. Bass in the Sun. You don't encounter Draught Bass that often these days in my experience. I know of a couple of places where it is sold, but I wouldn't go there just to seek the beer out as such. It wasn't always so. I used to make many a pilgrimage to the White Star. On a gorgeous summer's day last week, I was meeting a friend in Helensburgh, a town I know well from my youth in the West of Scotland. The Commodore Hotel. Draught Ba...

Tandleman's Beer Blog: Another Thing the Pub is Best For
http://tandlemanbeerblog.blogspot.com/2015/07/another-thing-pub-is-best-for.html
Tandleman's Random and Particular Thoughts on Beer. Wednesday, 29 July 2015. Another Thing the Pub is Best For. One of our Sunday table from the Tandle Hill Tavern has died. We knew it was coming and so did he. Yesterday after his funeral we met, not at the Tavern, but at the nearby Ship, thus allowing the landlord of the THT to join us to see the lad off in a style he'd have liked. We had a piss up. Sounds like the perfect send off for a pub man. 29 July 2015 at 22:46. 30 July 2015 at 08:57. Nautical vi...

Tandleman's Beer Blog: Fight
http://tandlemanbeerblog.blogspot.com/2015/05/fight.html
Tandleman's Random and Particular Thoughts on Beer. Tuesday, 19 May 2015. We are always being told by the anti drink lobby of "alcohol fuelled violence", but I have remarked here and in comments hither and thither that I can't remember the last time I saw a fight in a pub. Well I can now. Sort of. On my usual Wednesday out at the Regal Moon. An unusual incident I think you'll agree. I'm still guessing though that it will be a long time before I "see" a fight in a pub again. 19 May 2015 at 10:44. This blo...
I might have a glass of beer: Wait, yes it IS your grandad’s homebrew – so what?
http://refreshingbeer.blogspot.com/2015/06/yes-its-your-grandads-homebrew-so-what.html
I might have a glass of beer. Tuesday, 16 June 2015. Wait, yes it IS your grandad’s homebrew – so what? It’s a truism that advertising and other PR campaigns are disproportionately aimed either at the young and would-be hip, for reasons which are better explored elsewhere. It seems to me it’s as true of beer as of anything else. Do an older, beer-bellied and tatty-jumpered crowd come? Uh-oh – no double page feature in the Sunday paper for you! I asked George a few questions about his brewing. I wanted to...
I might have a glass of beer: Well, what’s wrong with being sexy?
http://refreshingbeer.blogspot.com/2015/04/well-whats-wrong-with-being-sexy.html
I might have a glass of beer. Tuesday, 14 April 2015. Well, what’s wrong with being sexy? So now you know. Our motion about sexism. In the beer industry for the CAMRA AGM – many thanks again to all the people who commented and helped develop it – was rejected by the conference procedures committee on the grounds, basically, that everything we were proposing was already CAMRA policy and/or the law of the land. I have appealed the decision, but do not expect anything to come of it. But what do I know?
I might have a glass of beer: I drank bitter all night
http://refreshingbeer.blogspot.com/2015/06/i-drank-bitter-all-night.html
I might have a glass of beer. Friday, 26 June 2015. I drank bitter all night. I didn't intend to go to the Glasgow Real Ale Festival and spend all night drinking bitter from old-fashioned family breweries. I really didn't. The sweet yet dry and austere flavour of Harvey's is common across all the beers I sample from the proper 3.5% IPA to the stronger, sweeter Thomas Paine. But it’s so luscious that a half is enough. I am greedy and try to cram in a second at closing time, and it's too much. You'd think ...
I might have a glass of beer: January 2015
http://refreshingbeer.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
I might have a glass of beer. Friday, 23 January 2015. Maclays Inns in administration. Monogram detail from former Maclays brewery. I was as surprised as anyone to hear yesterday that Maclay Inns had gone into administration. I have no inside knowledge of the company, so am not going to speculate as to the cause. The brewery was worn out, needed rebuilding and the business wasn’t profitable enough to finance that. Shows that. If not C&C, I am fairly optimistic the pubs will find other buyers. For several...
I might have a glass of beer: Giving succour to the enemy
http://refreshingbeer.blogspot.com/2015/02/giving-succour-to-enemy.html
I might have a glass of beer. Wednesday, 4 February 2015. Giving succour to the enemy. Dear old CAMRA seems to have a knack for putting its foot in things. For Tuesday night saw the award for CAMRA’s Parliamentarian of the Year go to the MP for Burton-on-Trent, Andrew Griffiths. The rationale is that Griffiths has - as he well ought to do as chair of the All-Party Beer Group - supported the cut in beer duty that CAMRA has called for for many years, and was finally implemented in 2013. It will most certai...
I might have a glass of beer: February 2015
http://refreshingbeer.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
I might have a glass of beer. Thursday, 12 February 2015. How can CAMRA lead in combatting beer sexism? Note: This post has been edited.]. I don’t have time at the moment to write an introduction explaining why this document is here, but I am just putting this draft up here so that people can comment. Thanks to all who have already made suggestions for improvements. On paper CAMRA is already committed to equality. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion. CAMRA has a long-standing commitment ...

Feasting and Frolicking with a Pilgrim. Braving a Feast amidst Force Majeure. Friday, May 20, 2011. This was supposed to be last week's post, but since Blogger went into some sort of hiatus, I postponed the same blog to this day. Tonight, I will be featuring a happy event in our family that took all the odds to happen, despite the heavens seemingly preventing it from pushing through. And so, the unthinkable happened. On a hot, summer's day, just before the sun set, heavy rains came pouring down as Ty...
