Skip Cottage Curling: March 2011
http://skipcottagecurling.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, March 31, 2011. Rhona Martin did the honours in throwing the official 'opening stone', with local young curlers Fiona Telfer and Naomi Whyte in attendance. And here we all were, with the question, "How much help would Rhona's stone need to get to the tee? Actually, very little. Pretty much right on the poppy, Rhona, well done, although the perfectionists would say that Ruaraidh Whyte must have given her a couple of inches too much ice! Photos © Skip Cottage. Skip Cottage: August 2014
http://skipcottage.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, August 26, 2014. A touch of steam. Here are a few pics which show how I had my steam 'fix' this month. 48151 was a London Midland and Scottish Railway 8F class 2-8-0, used to haul heavy freight. It was built at Crewe in 1942, and these days it is one of the West Coast Railways' stable of locomotives certified to run on the mainline. It was pulling Statesman Rail's 'Fellsman' service. When I saw it at Carlisle earlier this month. I made a return visit to the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway.

Monday, December 29, 2014. Best New Year I ever had? There's been a few memorable ones over the years. In a wee bothy in the Monadhliath, deep in snow, was special. But the one I was thinking of recently was 1982 into 1983, celebrated somewhere in the Himalayan foothills as we trekked across Nepal, from the Indian border to the Everest region. I reminisced about this a couple of years ago, see here. Even if not everyone we met seemed willing to let us pass! How quickly the intervening years have gone by.

Skip Cottage: February 2015
http://skipcottage.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, February 08, 2015. I began my walk from the north, on the Braco-Blackford Road. In the past the curlers would have arrived by train, or from what is now the A9, to the south. What's this about a missing bridge over Allan Water? Sadly, Carsebreck farmhouse is derelict. This is the south west corner of the loch. The loch is drained by this little stream, and there would have been a sluice hereabouts to regulate the level of the water. Looking across the loch towards Carsebreck farmhouse. This photo...

Skip Cottage: October 2014

Wednesday, October 29, 2014. I planted this Acer not long after I moved to Skip. Twelve years on, just look at it! After all the rain earlier this week, I went out to see what the River Annan was doing. Here it is under the Jocksthorn Bridge. The river wasn't keeping within its banks on Tuesday afternoon. Mind you, it had a long way to go to match last December 30, see here. But it was well over in places, as you can see. Now, there's a story, or two, about Wamphray's bath tub. In my pre-blogging days in...

Skip Cottage: November 2014

Sunday, November 23, 2014. Sunday, November 23, and the early morning mist is beginning to clear across the fields. Actually, I'm fibbing somewhat. It's not 'early'! I don't do early very often these days. I took the photo above at 11.30. How lovely to see the sun appear after that. This deciduous cotoneaster has good colour. A few tubs with some winter colour have been planted up to give me a lift on the cold, grey days that are still to come. And a lot of new bulbs have been planted too. Skip Cottage C...

Friday, January 30, 2015. Wamphray has had a bit of a dusting of snow this week. It makes the garden look so different! I wasn't the first to head out the other morning! On foot. Snow is great, especially when you don't have to drive in it. Even a little blue sky to lighten the mood! Back to the garden. Just wait! Snowdrops in the snow! Pix © Skip Cottage. Wednesday, January 28, 2015. I wasn't the only one making a special trip to the Citadel Station. The sun had come out, and the locomotive is ready for...

Sunday, July 19, 2015. This is an advert from The Graphic. Of November 18, 1899. It goes on to say, "SUNLIGHT SOAP is undoubtedly THE BEST SOAP in the World for all-round use." It was the product that set William Lever, the son of a Bolton wholesale grocer, on his way to amassing a personal fortune. His first purchase of paintings which could be used to market his bars of soap led to him becoming a great collector. Read about him here. The gallery's paintings can be seen here. Port Sunlight village is a ...

Skip Cottage: Manchester's MOSI
http://skipcottage.blogspot.com/2015/07/manchesters-mosi.html
Thursday, July 16, 2015. I had a splendid visit to the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester yesterday. Manchester is of course 'Cottonopolis' and I enjoyed learning the various stages by which raw cotton is turned into finished cloth. Many of the machines were shown working by a talented guide, or an 'Explainer', as the museum calls these members of staff. A special exhibition that I wanted to see was the Wellcome Image Awards 2015. My favourite part of the museum though, as you will not be surpr...
