I'm fascinated by the nature of small-world networks and how adding a little randomness can dramatically change the nature of connectedness. Our neural networks are structured a bit like this. I wanted to explore this on my own, and so wrote a little program that allows one to control how much randomness is put into a clustered network of links. What are the materials of thought? In a search for a physical basis we find neuronal networks, electro-chemical spikes traversing the networks, and a patterned and coherent flow of those spikes in time. Thoughts move through our neural networks as little spikes of chemistry-induced electricity. Like pinballs bouncing from bumper to bumper; these spikes connect the most subtle of patterns, memories that traverse the small world linkages of our brain, axon to dendrite, axon to dendrite. My installation, entitled Garden of Gongs, was placed in the deep playa (middle of nowhere, for those who don’t know the lingo), right where I wanted it. The installation was composed of Twelve Gongs and bells, all made from scrap and re-purposed materials, along with benches and lights. Excited to show again at Youtopia! October 1, 2013.
