English XXI – English Language in the 21st Century. Monthly Archives: December 2013. December 26, 2013. 8216;Fillers’ Part Three – Some Personal History. I didn’t even realize that. Well, there is the issue, in a nutshell. I must have said uh pretty frequently, and I had no idea I was doing it. My father had pointed out one, but were there others? The important part of all this is the fact that I didn’t just decide that I would have to avoid ‘uh’ when giving a speech (not something I did that often anywa...

English XXI – English Language in the 21st Century. Daily Archives: February 5, 2014. February 5, 2014. English XXI – Is it Time for “Therz”? To begin he discussion, I will point out that Spanish has a verb – haber. Means ‘to have’, but in the modal format. In English we have one verb ‘to have’ that serves as a transitive verb ( I have some money ) and as a modal auxiliary ( I have borrowed some money ). In Spanish the transitive verb is tener (Yo tengo dinero). 8211; Hay gente en el parque. I admit that...

English XXI – English Language in the 21st Century. Daily Archives: November 17, 2013. November 17, 2013. Do you, like, like the word like? English is suffering from a plague of fillers. There really are no other traditional uses for the word like. Today, however, like might be the most often used word in the language. How many times I have heard something similar to this (for example, while eavesdropping on the bus as a commuter)? So, how did this begin? How was that possible? In my next submission I wi...
Society & Culture: What’s Love got to do with it? | Brian Fontaine Snowden

English XXI – English Language in the 21st Century. January 17, 2014. Society and Culture: What’s Love got to do with it? My students at Wilmington College, who are mostly in the non-traditional category, must wonder if I am serious or kidding when I say, two words I avoid using in English are love. Some of them laugh, some of them put frowns on their faces, and others probably don’t know how to react. Surely, they all think I am unusual in this regard. In another I’ll tackle the pesky word happiness.

English XXI – English Language in the 21st Century. February 26, 2014. English XXI – Fillers Part Four. I Sort of, Kind of, Enjoy Life. This is another in my series of posts that deal with fillers. I am coming to the conclusion that fillers are here to stay. I don’t want to accept this reality, and I continue to look for signs that the use of fillers is one the wane, but I feel increasingly helpless in my quest to reverse the trend. You no doubt noticed the number of times I used sort of. Now, let’s say ...

The First Thing About Me. The Photos of the 1970 Trip. A bit of my History in Pictures. It has come to my attention as I was selling and signing books at the Menil Fest today that I have failed to write any blogs for a very long time. It’s easy to rely on re-posting or re-blogging information that is sent to me. Add to that my daughter’s wedding and all that goes with it, I’ve been a busy monkey these past few months. I get lazy about posting. My great grandfather was a hotelier in Durban, SA. When m...

Nope, they were not afraid of me. Me, still standing on my desk. I didn’t have to turn around to know who had just re-entered the classroom. This same teacher soon discovered that my lack of attention and discipline might be related to the fact that I couldn’t see a thing she was writing on the board. Board? Suddenly my co...
