For this unit, I would like to focus on the concept of overcoming adversity through hard work and determination. Jesse. Prior to our reading of the novel, I would like the students to read up on Gary Soto. BrianLoney: Final Project book

http://www.brianloney.blogspot.com/2010/03/final-project-book.html

Wednesday, March 24, 2010. Well, I originally started with a book called Borderlands. It tells the story of an immigrant family dealing with issues such as language and culture shock when coming across the border. This book is good, but I'm not sure I'd want to teach it in my class due to the fact that I, myself, sometimes have a hard time understanding what's happening in the book. In light of this, I chose to go with a very popular book, Jesse. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). House on Mango Street.

BrianLoney: Heritage

http://www.brianloney.blogspot.com/2010/03/heritage.html

Thursday, March 25, 2010. Family is a deeply rooted aspect of my culture. As I am very close to mine, so, too, are many Hispanic students as it is a defining attribute of Hispanic heritage. This connection is something that I could easily use to create bonds to my Hispanic students and find common ground. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Preparing Culturally Responsive Teachers. BrianLoney: Culturally Diverse Classroom

http://www.brianloney.blogspot.com/2010/03/culturally-diverse-classroom.html

Monday, March 15, 2010. This was certainly an interesting read. I've only encountered a few ESL students and just recently the concept has really crept into my ideas about teaching. So what do you use to start off? How long til you change strategies? How do I relate to ESL students on a level that truly aids their learning? It is clear that this is a challenging topic. BrianLoney: House on Mango Street

http://www.brianloney.blogspot.com/2010/03/house-on-mango-street.html

Wednesday, March 24, 2010. House on Mango Street. As an English teacher, I feel that it's always important to expand your gamut of texts and styles of texts. House on Mango Street, with its lazy poems and strange way of bopping around to construct a story was new and intriguing to me. Aside from just the format of the book, I feel that it gave insight into a bevy of important themes that students would be well off to be informed about. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Preparing Culturally Responsive Teachers: Using Latino Children’s Literature in Teacher Education," Kathy Escamilla and Sally Nathenson-Meija. http://teachhisplit.blogspot.com/2010/03/supermercado-michoacan.html

On Learning About Hispanic Literature And Culture For The Classroom. Sunday, March 14, 2010. Yesterday, I went to Supermercado Michoacan, a Hispanic supermarket near my home. I've driven by this place many times, but since I'm typically able to get whatever I need foodwise at Meijer or the health food store, I've never stopped by. Well, I'm making tortilla soup this weekend and needed Mexican oregano. Some things I noticed: fruits I had never seen before (and whose names I didn't write down because I, st...
