Words, words, words. There are several recipes for Butternut squash. Here is the basic one. Picking, trimming and cooking Butternut Squash. If you grow your own butternut squash, choose one with a brown stem. 1 Slice off each end of the squash with a sharp knife. 2 Take a soup spoon and carve out the seeds from the bottom or 'bell' end of the squash. 4 Lay the squash on the cutting board lengthwise and slice into one inch rounds.
