It began as international collaboration between Autism Services, Inc. and Hope and Homes for Children, Romania (HHCR) with the objective of helping children with special needs move from life at an institution to a family-based alternative. One institution at a time, children with special needs were moved from the previous standard of a life restricted to cribs, mats or tied to beds; to a new environment where rights and needs of the individual are met and respected by caregivers.

Bridges for New Beginnings is committed to assisting, supporting, and promoting all governmental and non-governmental organizations in the region that are in the process of deinstitutionalization. To that end, our long-term project is to open a Regional Training Center in northern Romania that will allow us to train and educate people from all Central and Eastern European nations. During the first year of the collaboration, HHCR closed three institutions in northern Romania with training support from ASI. The positive feedback received from this early success early convinced both agencies that similar results could be achieved throughout Central and Eastern Europe and in Africa. Bridges for New Beginnings, Inc. was created as a United States not-for-profit corporation to work with governmental and non-governmental organizations. Bridges is a unique collaboration.
