ithinkx: Top 50 Albums of 2011: 50 - 41

December 27, 2011. Top 50 Albums of 2011: 50 - 41. Jóhann Jóhannsson “The Miners' Hymns". The Icelandic composer's first album for the British label FatCat, The Miners' Hymns. Is a soundtrack to Bill Morrison's film of the same name. Appropriately for a soundtrack to a film about Northumberland coalminers, there is heavy reliance on brass. Minimal, haunting and emotive, this is one of Jóhannsson's best. The Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble “Mr. Machine". Much like label-mate Herbert, Mr. Machine. In 2010, it...

October 14, 2010. News: iPods are Not Meant to be Portable! It's surprising, I know, but I have this on good authority. Okay, firstly, I'm pretty certain the iPod is supposed to be a portable device. At least, phrases like "iPod classic is the take-everything-everywhere iPod" on the Apple website. Pretty much suggest that it is. As does the fact that it's not fixed to the dock. Secondly, I'm not sure of the exact chronology here but I'm pretty certain the iPod dock was invented after the iPod as ...So, a...

ithinkx: Top 50 Albums of 2011: 10 - 1
http://ithinkxblog.blogspot.com/2011/12/top-50-albums-of-2011-10-1.html
December 31, 2011. Top 50 Albums of 2011: 10 - 1. James Blake “James Blake”. There'll be some groans at this being #1 but no other album this year got as much rotation. For those familiar with his EPs, such as the Kelis-sampling CMYK, Blake's debut album was something of a shock. The wonk and bass pushed back revealing a new Blake as a singer-songwriter. Tim Hecker "Ravedeath, 1972". Craft Spells "Idle Labor". Tin Man “Perfume”. Weird, twisted and brilliant, Tin Man's off-kilter piano melodies and unexpe...

December 30, 2011. Top 50 Albums of 2011: 20 - 11. Tape “Revelationes”. Hailing from Stockholm, Tape are now on their eighth album and have been around over a decade. Garnering some deserved attention in 2008 with the superb Luminarium. Slipped a little under the radar. A short and truly beautiful album of post-rock with jazzy drums and a heap of melancholy. Timber Timbre “Creep On Creepin' On”. Amon Tobin “Isam”. Battles “Gloss Drop”. In 2010, vocalist Tyondai Braxton quit Battles halfway through record...

ithinkx: November 2010

November 26, 2010. Year In Review: Top 50 Albums of 2010. Ithinkx is about to publish its 'Top 50 Albums of 2010' list and I have to say it has been an amazing year for music! This may sound a bit rash, but for my money this has been the best year for music in about a decade. 2007 is the only year that comes close and even that has nothing on 2010 in terms of number and quality of releases and general musical activity. It looked like an amazing year for hip hop and it wasn't bad, with the new Kanye album...

July 25, 2010. Music Review: Arcade Fire – The Suburbs. This is Arcade Fire at their best, bringing together what was good about both of their previous albums. At sixteen songs long it may be a little unwieldy but this is a band who have rediscovered what makes them great and aren't letting go anytime soon. Posted by Vincent Pollard. Links to this post. August 20, 2010. It Kills is a fantastic new Post-Rock trio hailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia. They have just released their eponymous debut album and it indeed does kill! Will Robinson plays the electric guitar, Lisa Lipton plays viola, piano and guitar and Solomon Vromans plays cello and guitar, with all three sharing singing duties. Darcey Fraser plays drums on the record. We spoke to members Will and Lisa about their new project. How did you guys meet? What are your major influences? Black Emperor, M...
