This ongoing project was actually started in the early 1980s (on 5x3 index cards! And has developed and grown sporadically since then. The aim is to provide a historical gazetteer of every street in the city from Portslade to Rottingdean, Patcham to the sea, in as much detail as is possible and practical for the streets and individual buildings. The first newspaper in Sussex was the Sussex Weekly Advertiser, or Lewes Journal. Launched in 1749; it covered the whole of the county, including Brighton. The first newspaper in Brighton was the Brighton Herald. Which was also the longest-lived, surviving for 8,821 editions from 6 September 1806 to 30 September 1971. Printing paper was also taxed.
