Bristol SEDS started off the new academic year with the University of Bristol’s first ever CanSat competition! The event was organised with help from the University’s Aerospace Engineering Department. And the Avionics Group. The teams presented plots of the data collected from their BMP180 temperature and pressure sensor. The altitude was calculated from the pressure values. 1st place: Jason DonnerCan. 2nd place: Can Pellegrino. 3rd place: Yes we Fan. 4th place: CRAM Sat. Proud to be part of.

The UBSEDS20 balloon was built from 50 micron thick PA-EVOH-PE multilayer film and was 1.9 meters in diameter. This is 0.4m more than the usual 1.5m diameter. The larger size meant the longest axis of the balloon and payload combined was more than 2 meters, and so a NOTAM was required and obtained for the launch. The balloon carried two payloads. UBSEDS19 was the backup tracker (mass 13 grams), and UBSEDS20 was the main Raspberry Pi Zero payload (mass 62 grams). The free lift was about 25 grams.

We send stuff into the stratosphere and sometimes get it back again. We are the Bristol branch of UKSEDS (UK Students for the Exploration and Development of Space). Here are some of our projects. During the 2015-2016 academic year Bristol SEDS built a second G-Class model rocket, named Whitebird Heavy. It was entered into the UKSEDS National Rocketry Competition.
