Mike Holland arrived in Brighton, fresh from the Merchant Navy as an unemployed 18 years old, but he was in no mood to waste any time on the dole. He found work on building sites and invested his wages in tools. A HERO OF ENGINEERING. In 1866 the Goldstone Pumping Station (now the British Engineerium) commenced supplying an abundance of fresh clean water to the citizens of Brighton and Hove. It was designed and built by Thomas Hawkesley, an eminent civil engineer who campaigned for the provision of clean drinking water. In his career he completed over 150 water supply schemes of which the British Engineerium is a particularly fine example.

THE WORLD OF ENGINEERING. It was Jonathan Minns who saved the Goldstone Pumping Station from certain demolition and then coined the term ‘Engineerium’ to create a local institution. From those early days in the 1970’s the British Engineerium became a centre for steam engineering. That is why The British Engineerium is important to the cultural heritage of our city, and inspired Mike Holland to step into the breach when both the buildings and the prized collection of engineering exhibits were about to fall under the auctioneer’s hammer. Pride of the original Goldstone Pumping Station, this wonderful steam engine has been fully restored by the British Engineerium Trust. Led by Chief Engineer Peter Fagg, a skilled team have lavished many hours of skilled and loving attention on its complete refurbishment.
