July 20, 2011. We left Cuenca this morning to Guayaquil, driving through Cajas national park. Cajas national park is beautiful and dramatic and reminds me of the mountains around Whistler, Canada. There are over 250 lagoons speckled throughout mountains shrouded by low hanging clouds in Cajas. The drive was about 3 1/2 hours. Tomorrow we leave for the US via Lima. This trip was fantastic, but as the saying goes, there is no place like home and I am looking forward to seeing my hubby and my lovely home.

My niece and her fiancé live in Oaxaca, but the wedding will take place in the coastal resort of Huatulco, a short plane ride or 8 hour drive from Oaxaca. We met some of the residents who have been there since childhood; two are very talented musicians (who happen to be blind) and will be providing musical entertainment at the wedding!

December 28, 2014. Today we went about half an hour outside of Oaxaca to the pre-hispanic ruins of Monte Alban, a complex of pyramids built by the Zapotecs. Monte Alban was used largely for ceremonial purposes and scarifices. These pyramids also housed tombs. It was very hot and sunny, so vendors at the gate did a brisk business of selling straw hats!
