bruce's rwanderings: Fighting the same old battles
http://bruceswanderings.blogspot.com/2009/12/fighting-same-old-battles.html
The ups and downs of life as an education adviser in Rwanda. Wednesday, 2 December 2009. Fighting the same old battles. It's World Aids Day. This is an extract from Wednesday's "New Times" and applies to my own district of Muhanga, showing that we've got a long way to go to change people's attitudes. Religion hampering condom use. 8220;We need combined efforts in educating residents on the dangers of HIV/Aids because it has become evident that few people are using condoms due to religious conviction.

The ups and downs of life as an education adviser in Rwanda. Sunday, 28 June 2009. A quick breakfast and change, and I’m off on a moto to Momma’s. Today is the baby naming ceremony for four orphans, and I’m not at all sure quite what to expect. I know the celebrations will last most of the day, but exactly what happens in what order is an unknown. 8220;Expect the unexpected” is VSO’s motto, and, boy, doesn’t it just apply every day! Then we dine with all the orphans – 40 of them – on roast ch...Just as I...
bruce's rwanderings: Fresh strawberries in November
http://bruceswanderings.blogspot.com/2009/12/fresh-strawberries-in-november.html
The ups and downs of life as an education adviser in Rwanda. Tuesday, 1 December 2009. Fresh strawberries in November. At eight o’clock I take a moto out to Mushubati and pay the remaining money into Nyarusange’s school so that they can complete their water tank. That’s the absolute last slice of water money – three complete systems, and about five repairs or improvements in other schools. 8500 pupils with access to clean water. Posted by Bruce's Rwanda blog. bruce's rwanderings: Saying goodbye is so hard
http://bruceswanderings.blogspot.com/2009/12/saying-goodbye-is-so-hard.html
The ups and downs of life as an education adviser in Rwanda. Thursday, 3 December 2009. Saying goodbye is so hard. Today is my last full day in Gitarama. This will also be the last daily entry on the blog, although I’ll try to summarise two years of a life changing experience when I get home. This is Africa – colourful, noisy, frenetic and indolent at the same time, hopeless and ambitious at the same time, grasping and giving. I love it here. Back to the flat. My bedroom cupboards are bare; the walls...
bruce's rwanderings: Rwanda - the final reckoning
http://bruceswanderings.blogspot.com/2010/03/rwanda-final-reckoning.html
The ups and downs of life as an education adviser in Rwanda. Tuesday, 9 March 2010. Rwanda - the final reckoning. OK, its three months since I left Rwanda and I’ve had time to adjust to life back in the “real world”. Christmas and New Year have been and gone; I’ve seen most of the relatives; I’ve even met up with a group of past and continuing volunteers. I’ve already done around ten talks and slideshows to various groups about my time as a VSO to audiences ranging from Womens Institutes to schools...

Anna in Cambodia: November 2008
http://annamaton.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
The opinions expressed here are my own opinions. They do not necessarily reflect the views of VSO. Saturday, 22 November 2008. Off She Went With a Trumpety Trump. I left mum on Koh Chang, island of elephants, on Friday and she headed on to Singapore as I returned to Phnom Penh. But not before we had enjoyed what Koh Chang had to offer and we finished the holiday off in style with elephant riding, snorkelling and swimming in waterfalls. She was left on the (very tame) elephant for quite some time with no ...

Six Months in Kigali: It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you...
http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2009/01/its-gonna-take-lot-to-drag-me-away-from.html
Friday, January 9, 2009. It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you. I'm not even remotely ready for this. I had to physically remove myself from my laptop the other morning to avoid applying for a 12-month position here in Kigali. I know I need to go 'home'. The problem is that I. When my flight to Kilimanjaro just before Christmas took off, I felt this overwhelming, heady sense of. When you can live. I didn't realise this was going to hurt so much. Breakages & Breakthroughs | Kathryn's Namibian Adventure
https://kathryninnamibia.wordpress.com/2008/09/21/breakages-breakthroughs
Kathryn’s Namibian Adventure. Just another VSO volunteer experience. For some reason, over the past four weeks, pretty much everything electrical I own has given up on life. In fact, in one 24 hour period my camera, watch, phone and car packed up. Since then the Ipod has has gone to Ipod heaven oh, and some ruthless individual sold my small collection of eggshell jewellery. Would I ever have experienced a moment like that if I had continued working for the Post Office? Laquo; The African Male. Anyway; I&...

Strains, Pains & Mud Stuck Wheels | Kathryn's Namibian Adventure
https://kathryninnamibia.wordpress.com/2008/03/15/strains-pains-mud-stuck-wheels
Kathryn’s Namibian Adventure. Just another VSO volunteer experience. Strains, Pains and Mud Stuck Wheels. It’s been a while since i’ve had the time to sit down and write this blog probably since my Finance Manager left and I ended up running an organisation on my own! Still, i’m not complaining it’s great experience and i’ve probably achieved more here in 5 months than in ten years at the Post Office. And get stranded in the bush in my mud splattered truck for three hours before being rescued by DRFN.

Stephen and Mary @ Rwanda: Back Again!
http://stephenandmaryrwanda.blogspot.com/2011/10/coming-back-to-rwanda-was-hard-but.html
Where we were based. Rwanda from our eyes. Saturday, October 1, 2011. Was hard but necessary. We decided to have the maximum impact by refocusing our work on delivering as many workshops as we could to as many schools as possible in the short time we had left. Deputy Heads of Rwamagana District hard at work. Well, we managed to do eight of the half day workshops and the one for deputies before we finally had to make the decision to come home after the death of Mary’s father. So, the people of. Saturday, ...

Stephen and Mary @ Rwanda: Rwanda from our eyes
http://stephenandmaryrwanda.blogspot.com/p/around-rwanda.html
Where we were based. Rwanda from our eyes. Rwanda from our eyes. Lake Mugesera from a distance. Rwanda from the roadside. One of the questions you might be asked when you apply for VSO is about your vision of what your placement might be like. Actually, unless you have travelled a lot or done a placement before, it's really difficult to visualise the setting that you might find yourself. We had been to Guyana for two years and we knew that Rwanda would be totally different and we were right! Hi, hope you...
Anna in Cambodia: May 2009
http://annamaton.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
The opinions expressed here are my own opinions. They do not necessarily reflect the views of VSO. Thursday, 28 May 2009. Holidays well and truly over, the first week back at work was jam packed with travelling back and forth, meetings and a really bad cold! Everyone who was involved participated really positively, the atmosphere was light and fun (Deirdre and I were very good at humiliating ourselves by singing the toilet song with actions, which helped! And the students were fantastic. And so the feeli...

Bruce – international man of…. November 23, 2011. A few days back the Grade 9 students all gathered together to receive an inspirational introduction to our new unit ‘Poetry of Protest’. Being old hippies at heart, myself (old) and Jabiz (hippy) had agreed to sing a few of our favorite protest songs. I dug up an anti damming song and a Jackson Browne. Anti-war mongering song whilst Jabiz went for one by the master, Bob Dylan ‘The Times They are…’. 8221; Of course there weren’t 80, more like 2000. Ning Ni...
