A former work colleague who I used to be quite close to but have lost touch with over the years. Sue knows her too, and we used to socialise with her and her husband some years ago when we all lived in the same town, Kings Langley. And if so, when and how? That comes with the mention of cancer? It was quarterly scan time again recently - and more importantly quarterly consultation time with Sue's oncologist. No matter how many times we've been through this process, the week or so between scan and results is a nervous period when you can't help your mind wandering and preparing for the possibility that this is going to be the time they say things have got seriously worse. That takes her inventory up to 14.

We realise how lucky we are to have the NHS there to help. Sue would not be here now without it. But it is no exaggeration to say that dealing with the NHS today is noticeably harder and more frustrating than it was when this journey started nearly five years ago. That's not a criticism of the people in the NHS who are on the whole superb. It's the system.

It's been a while since Sue has needed treatment for her cancer, but it's looking like we're on the verge of potentially another operation.
