The Tram53 project

A regular member of our team, Guy Hall, has found the last tram ever to run on Brighton Corporation's tram lines! ABOVE: The top deck, with handrails and decking in surprisingly good condition. ABOVE: The nearside of the car offers a tantalising glimpse of the past - the Brighton Corporation Tramways coachwork and crest are just visible in this photo. Wonderful! BCT Trams and infrastructure. Works Car No.1. The last Brighton Tramcar needs you! Brighton Corporation Tramways ran for 38 years from 1901 until 1939, of the 116 tram cars built by the Corporation at their Lewes Road Depot, only 1, number 53, still survives. Number 53 was built in 1937 and after only 2 years of running, was sold to a West Sussex farm where she remained until the 1970s. For the next 3 decades she sat in a shed, untouched, until now. You can make a difference! Or follow us on our blog.

BCT Trams and infrastructure. Works Car No.1. History of Tram 53. 53 was fitted with glass screens above the decency panels of the upper deck, and if Brighton had kept her trams, they would all have been fitted with this feature. Most of the Brighton tram-cars were scrapped for the war effort, but 53, along with 2 others, was coverted to a shed at Lewes Road. She was then sold to a Partridge Green pig farm where she remained until the 1970s, by which time she was the only survivor.
