Holistic Mama: February Reads
http://holisticmum.blogspot.com/2015/02/february-reads.html
Saturday, February 28. Thea Stilton 4 Catching the Giant Wave. Thea Stilton and the Star Castaways. I think I forgot to mention last month that she joined our local library's Book Track scheme. It's for children aged 6 to read 100 books. Hardly a challenge for Miss6 but a fun scheme. They borrow books, and on returning them chat about them to a librarian. Only the ones they chat about get added to their list. Hello Kitty and Friends, Book 2). Hello Kitty and Friends, Book 6). Camille and the Sunflowers.
Holistic Mama: praise
http://holisticmum.blogspot.com/2009/10/praise.html
Wednesday, October 28. I once belonged to a parenting forum that I left because of the extreme beliefs expounded there. One experience was in a discussion about praise. It was very much an anti-praise group. A mother was telling a story about what she saw in a store. A child had picked up a jar and placed it in the trolley, and his mother said to him, "Good job! The reaction from the forum parent was - poor kid. How sorry she felt for that child who was not valued. I was like, give me a break! Well, you ...
Holistic Mama: September 2014
http://holisticmum.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Tuesday, September 30. I hadn't planned on starting Shakespeare so early. The lack of resources for younger children didn't help. It seems the bard is introduced in schools no earlier than age 11. While most of his stories are too mature in content for little ears, there are a few that could be shared with the younger generations. My own 6.5 year-old really enjoyed her first Shakespeare - A Midsummer Night's Dream. I finally found Mr William Shakespeare's Plays. She wanted to read further from the first ...
Holistic Mama: October 2014
http://holisticmum.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, October 30. It's interesting that I never bought coloured silks for my girl to play as a baby. I've forgotten the reason why. Now at 6.5 years old she has her first set. Of course, she has several cloths of mine to role play with - scarves, printed tapestries, sarongs. Today these were flowers in a garden, butterfly wings, zoo exhibition areas, props in a story I played out for her, all worn as a skirt for an element fairy. Wednesday, October 22. As Maleficent is from the Moors, I reminded her ...
Holistic Mama: August 2014
http://holisticmum.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Friday, August 29. I've mentioned the Victorians a few times, little facts that popped into my mind during our days. Such as how strict the schooling was and such. For no reason other than they were pieces of interesting information I knew that related to what we were doing or talking about at the time. The last time I mentioned them, she picked up on it more and asked to learn about these Victorians. So last Thursday we started with a book that was part of a History of Britain collection. Not specifical...
Holistic Mama: Joan of Arc
http://holisticmum.blogspot.com/2015/03/joan-of-arc.html
Friday, March 6. I think that the first mention of Joan of Arc was within one of her Middle Ages books 2 or 3 weeks back. Which, as any female knight would, led to discussion. We watched this youtube video - warrior women. A couple of scenes I muted and covered her eyes, but otherwise it wasn't too bad. Although it does of course involve war, battles, and an inquisition. Avoid Being Joan of Arc! She's ready to defend her castle, but knows that cleverness and compassion are also weapons of peace!
Holistic Mama: joy pockets
http://holisticmum.blogspot.com/p/joy-pockets.html
A joy-enhancing weekly community meme with a photo linky! Copy the text in the above box then paste into html widget or post. No matter what is going on in our lives finding the little moments that bring us some joy reminds us what we are here for. to love life. I find that on the toughest weeks, reminding myself of the pockets of joy puts everything into perspective for me, and on the great weeks, it's worth doubling the joy with a look back. They're 'pocket's because it's about the little things. I'm a...
Holistic Mama: I shed a skin
http://holisticmum.blogspot.com/2011/05/i-shed-skin.html
Thursday, May 5. I shed a skin. I have alternated between living according to other people's expectations, striving towards my self-imposed ideals, and following my true heart. In recent times, I allowed myself to be fuelled by the 'supermothers' of blogland. Not a lot, but enough. The woman of today competes by how much she can stuff into the day. We're proud of our To Do lists and when we schedule. Time to relax, we think it perfectly normal. What really struck me was the thought that, we are saying.
Holistic Mama: January 2015
http://holisticmum.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Monday, January 19. Neither one of us can recall how Medieval came up. I think it was mentioned in a book on toilet things. Or perhaps a BBC program. How ever it came about I offered it up as a learning topic. I Wonder Why Castles Had Moats and Other Questions About Long Ago. See Inside), Rob Lloyd Jones. We explored Castle View. And The Frost Dragon. Friday, January 16. For our continuing China. Imperial China (Ms. Frizzle's Adventures). Growing Up in Ancient China. The Seven Chinese Sisters. Someone po...
