The Practical Humanist: May 2015
http://thepracticalhumanist.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Sunday, May 31, 2015. I have been seeing occasional posts on Liberal sites about "poor shaming". These articles seek to shame those who place restriction on welfare benefits for the poor. They see fiscal conservatism in this area as "poor shaming". The fact is that middle class Americans have been raped by big business and are struggling to maintain their comfy lifestyles of travel, entertainment and college for all their kids. The same could be done for rehabilitated childless felons from poor backgroun...

The Practical Humanist: April 2015
http://thepracticalhumanist.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, April 30, 2015. The best way to avoid injustice is to live justly. Living lawfully and nonviolently does not require money or a particular skin color. In most communities, it does require courage. It seems to me courage is more lacking than justice in some groups who claim victimhood. Courage to be a lawful person is not limited by skin color, religious beliefs, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. Posted by Paul Creeden. Wednesday, April 29, 2015. DO THEY HAVE SOULS? The Practical Humanist: September 2013
http://thepracticalhumanist.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Monday, September 30, 2013. Community has been increasingly defined as a static phenomenon. In urban settings, it can be defined by meetings and activities. It can also be defined by a neighborhood's borders. Community centers are often confused with community itself. Church congregations are often equated with community. In biology, a community is a group of interacting living organisms sharing a common populated environment. Would anyone buy a heterosexual female community in today's parlance? A certai...

The Practical Humanist: December 2013
http://thepracticalhumanist.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 31, 2013. The re-tooling of my practice of writing this daily essay about my process of being a secular humanist requires me to clarify for myself what I want to share and how. This is part of my daily practice throughout each day, but I try to focus on one idea or process every morning for this blog, which I routinely write between 9 AM and 10 AM. Posted by Paul Creeden. Monday, December 30, 2013. I have used Blogger since 2005, beginning with Buddha's Pillow. What form this change in ...

The Practical Humanist: November 2013
http://thepracticalhumanist.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Saturday, November 30, 2013. Last evening I took a walk in the fading dusk. It was cold, about 32'F/0'C. The sky was cloudless, a deep azure blue fringed with pink. The dry air felt like menthol at the back of my throat. I looked across to Boston's waterfront buildings. They seemed magnified by the startling clarity of the clean air. Stunning. I am grappling with an ethical conundrum. As a nurse, I know the smoke is less healthy than exhaust from other sources. I also speculate the stove is illeg...A smo...

The Practical Humanist: July 2013
http://thepracticalhumanist.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Wednesday, July 31, 2013. Yesterday I posted an essay about the recent failure of police to potentially prevent the murder of a young woman in Boston. A police detective did not pursue a previous assault complaint by another woman last year against the chief suspect in the case. The chief suspect has an extensive record of violence and an extensive record of avoiding incarceration. My outrage over the recent case of police negligence stems from being raised by an ethical policeman, my father. My outr...

The Practical Humanist: August 2013
http://thepracticalhumanist.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 31, 2013. The world is buzzing over the next international hurling of missiles and bombs between Syria and other places. Like punks around a street fight, some people savor this. It becomes sport, grist for wagers. Those interventions would do more for world peace than any religion or philosophy throughout human history. Those interventions would save the lives of millions to come. Those interventions would strike at the violent corruption of capitalism by the military-industrial...Weapo...

The Practical Humanist: UNBELIEVABLE...AGAIN
http://thepracticalhumanist.blogspot.com/2015/07/unbelievableagain.html
Thursday, July 30, 2015. Beverly Scott had to resign from the directorship of my beloved MBTA here in Massachusetts shortly after the new governor, Charlie (not stuck on the MBTA) Baker, was inaugurated. Why? Lo and behold, she has been nominated for a 5-year appointment to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) by President Obama. Really? It is noteworthy that Ms. Scott is African-American. Now why would our African-American President choose to nominate an incompetent bureaucrat to a na...
