http://concrete2chickens.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Friday, December 16, 2011. There are some things that just make you warm and fuzzy during the Christmas season, especially in a small town. Goochland county was having its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the local YMCA, so the Good Wife, the three boys and myself headed down to participate. Then in the distance we could hear the sirens of a fire truck. It wasn't just blowing the siren now and then, it was running them full blast, and they were getting closer! Then we headed over to the craft t...

CONCRETE to CHICKENS: Deer Hunting Starts
http://concrete2chickens.blogspot.com/2013/10/deer-hunting-starts.html
Saturday, October 19, 2013. There is an advantage to using a bow, and in Virginia that includes crossbows. The season for bows is the first phase of deer season. Bowhunters get a full four weeks head start before muzzleloader season. That means all the deer are still out and about in the mornings and evenings before they start getting spooked by the shooting and go nocturnal. On a Saturday morning? Oldest Son put a new arrow in his bow in case we came upon the wounded deer. While we were tracking the...

CONCRETE to CHICKENS: October 2012
http://concrete2chickens.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 22, 2012. One of the benefits of living on the east coast, and Virginia in particular, is that you are surrounded by history. Everywhere you look, there are signs commemorating various events and landmarks that are important to our nation's history. Our county got a special treat at the end of September when Dahlgren's Raid was re-enacted throughout our county. For those of you who have never heard of Dahlgren's Raid, here is a primer. It was run over the weekend. They also rolled out a c...

CONCRETE to CHICKENS: February 2012
http://concrete2chickens.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Wednesday, February 29, 2012. Technically, my bees aren't gone, they are dead. Not all three hives, just the weaker of my original two hives. It was disappointing to find out, but not a total surprise. The health of this hive had been up and down this past fall, although the last time I had looked, the population was up and it seemed that it was going to pull through. Thursday, February 23, 2012. CONCRETE to CHICKENS: June 2012
http://concrete2chickens.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 18, 2012. Early May, our black australorp hen decided to go broody. For those that dont know, that means that the maternal instincts are kicking in and she is wanting to hatch some chickies. Except, there are two problems with that scenario. 1 - We dont have a rooster, so none of the eggs the hens have been laying have been fertile; and. 2 - We collect the eggs every day, and once she went broody, she stopped laying.
