Re-Tree, a program of the Buffalo Green Fund, recently wrapped up a fundraiser to finish off the goal of 30,000 trees planted by volunteers as a result of the October 2006 snowstorm. The News published the names of all of the donors in a full page ad on November 15, totaling over 500 individuals, corporations and foundations who, combined, raised well over $200,000. The Green Fund will be establishing a tree stewardship program in the spring of 2015. 2014 Buffalo Green Fund.

The City of Buffalo. Is going through a remarkable urban transformation that is attracting attention across the country. Mayor Byron Brown has secured over $35 million in capital improvement funds to Parks and Recreational spaces and the Buffalo Green Fun coordinates volunteer efforts with the City and continued best management practices. One of Buffalo’s most treasured cultural assets, this public urban forest is maintained, preserve and restored by the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy.

In the planting of any tree, proper selection is not only critically important; it is the key to the tree’s long term success. (Note: When planting trees in public spaces, species of trees and the purchase of trees will be decided by The City of Buffalo, Olmsted Parks or other government officials). When selecting a tree, there are four considerations:. Root ball type selection. Survey the area for planting to ensure there are no tree stumps or other obstacles that will deter digging a hole with a shovel.

You have finally arrived at the actual planting of your tree, but wait. there is still more work to be done. There will be times when planting pits have been pre-dug, but for safety reasons, often the soil at the hole site will be loosened, but will be left in place for volunteers to complete the digging process on planting day. Take a stroll through your neighborhood and you’ll see tree care mistakes made by well-intentioned tree keepers. For the health of your tree, be sure to avoid the common mistakes pictured below. Also to be added:. Don’t use trees to lock up bikes. Don’t nail or tack a sign to the tree trunk. Don’t wrap trees or trunks with lights.
