Wednesday, 9 February 2011. You may have noticed a lack of activity of late, this is a combination of general busyness and the fact that our broadband only got connected last week! This time of year is a difficult one the building trade, the unpredictability of the weather causes us difficulties, as well as the cold affecting curing times on cement work etc. Here's looking forward to a good summer and a busy year! Thursday, 16 December 2010. Here is a picture of our most recent extension (almost) finished. By now the electricians should have fitted the outside lights and the kitchen should be fitted. Saturday, 11 December 2010. Well, if you hadnt noticed there havent been many updates recently! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). We are a f...

Friday, 13 May 2011. Our latest project is upgrading a conservatory into a full brick-built extension. This, among the other things we have found may seem like minor errors, but have resulted in a lot more preparation work for us. The lesson to be learned is just because something looks nice, doesnt mean it was done properly! Larner Construction. Sent using BlackBerry from Orange. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). http://builderstalbans.blogspot.com/2011/07/with-hardcore-this-colourful-it-seems.html
Tuesday, 12 July 2011. With hardcore this colourful it seems a shame to lay paving! Some people may find it sad, but I love landscaping older properties. You get to dig through a century of history, find long-gone building materials and several iterations of landscape! By re-using old rubble as hardcore we can save on costs and land-fill. One essential point to note is that its best to blind off brick rubble with finer scalpings prior to compacting as this helps bind everything together.

Larner Construction: A Builder's Blog: November 2010
http://builderstalbans.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Monday, 8 November 2010. We've arrived at the knocking through stage of the job, and it's proved to be one of the most difficult steel configurations we've done. The engineer has designed a steel goal post construction quite different to the norm. Instead of resting the main beam on two vertical columns, the main beam slots bet. Difficult and time consuming as the distance between the vertical beams had to be exactly the right size to the millimetre. This is quite a task when lifting steel beams whic...

Half pyramid / pallisade quadruple hipped roof! Most of the cuts had to be done with a hand saw (the old fashioned way! I hope to post more pictures of the job as we go on, most of the brickwork is obscured by scaffolding at the moment, so will wait 'till later to photograph it. Most complicated roof I've seen in a while! Tuesday, 26 October 2010. The i...
