My Scuba Story: June 2010
http://buoyancycontrol.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
The underwater adventures of a novice diver, aged 45. Monday, June 28, 2010. Beware Scuba Diver - Hand Signals Only. I forgot something really important the last time I dived. My neglect was sort of excusable. Learning to dive is a bit lit learning to drive. There's so much to remember that you wonder how anyone manages to appear relaxed while doing it. I forgot to use hand signals because I had too much to think about. The 'I'm okay' signal is both a question and a statement. When you give the sign ...
My Scuba Story: February 2011
http://buoyancycontrol.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
The underwater adventures of a novice diver, aged 45. Wednesday, February 9, 2011. Belated Happy New Year. It's been quiet on the diving front. The gear's sitting in the conservatory waiting to be serviced. There's no shortage of good intentions about finding the local BSAC. The sea outside the front door occasionally looks inviting when the sun's shining (which it isn't today). But spring's on its way and it'll soon be time to renew my BSAC membership. That'll focus the mind on finding a local club!
My Scuba Story: Scuba Divers are Destroyers
http://buoyancycontrol.blogspot.com/2010/07/scuba-divers-are-destroyers.html
The underwater adventures of a novice diver, aged 45. Sunday, July 18, 2010. Scuba Divers are Destroyers. I just read the BBC News story of divers who've discovered what may be the oldest surviving champagne in the world. It came from a wreck in the Baltic. The world's seas are littered with sunken ships, many of them in shallow coastal waters because that's where the majority of people sail, within sight of land. Removing items from wrecks is one thing - wanton destruction is another. I recently rea...
My Scuba Story: December 2010
http://buoyancycontrol.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
The underwater adventures of a novice diver, aged 45. Saturday, December 4, 2010. This is my first winter as a scuba diver. But other than flicking through the pages of Dive magazine and looking at the pile of second-hand gear that I've acquired, nothing else is happening in my diving world. Even this blog has been neglected of late. Hence this post, which is really just to flag that I'm still here and I'm planning to be back in the water next year. Posted by Andrew Knowles. My Scuba Story: May 2011
http://buoyancycontrol.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
The underwater adventures of a novice diver, aged 45. Tuesday, May 17, 2011. Scuba Divers Spotted Over Weymouth Beach. Two scuba divers were recently sighted flying over Weymouth's main beach. Divers are a common sight in the nearby harbour, as they clamber in and out of dive boats. But it's unusual to see them on the beach, and especially over. They were, of course, kites. They were being flown as part of the kite festival, which was held on a bright and suitably blowy day earlier this month. So here's ...

Diary of our environmentally friendly extension and renovation of a 100 year old cottage. Friday, 10 June 2011. Roundup or hard graft? Just cos it's the world's biggest selling herbicide. We certainly don't know the answer. So we'll ponder this a while longer whilst also waiting for the contractor's quotes to arrive. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I'm a BT Storyteller for London 2012! Diary of our environmentally friendly extension and renovation of a 100 year old cottage. Monday, 25 July 2011. We've started filling the baskets - looking good so far but it looks like we'll need more materials. Labels: gabion basket recycling. Monday, 4 July 2011. Pinching an idea from Chelsea (which is suitably apt as we keep finding bottles in the garden that were buried by previous residents of Hillside before refuse collections existed) we'll be using a combination of beer and wine bottles to face ...
Hillside: Recycled drive
http://greeninghillside.blogspot.com/2011/10/recycled-drive.html
Diary of our environmentally friendly extension and renovation of a 100 year old cottage. Thursday, 27 October 2011. There are still plenty of things on the To-do list at Hillside, but laying the drive is the last major hard-landscaping work at the front of the house, making it look complete and getting rid of the last area of mud that we've lived with since we moved back two years ago! Hillside: Clover
http://greeninghillside.blogspot.com/2011/07/clover.html
Diary of our environmentally friendly extension and renovation of a 100 year old cottage. Saturday, 2 July 2011. Well the quotes are in, and we've decided to go with the cheapest and not to proceed with the contractor who was advocating the extensive use of roundup. Numerous 'net searches have given us reasons to doubt the 'safe' claims made to us. The downside is that we'll have plenty of weeding to do. So, just the small matter of calculating how many kg of seed we need before we get it ordered. Minist...

Diary of our environmentally friendly extension and renovation of a 100 year old cottage. Tuesday, 31 May 2011. The last few weeks have seen good progress with building the front garden wall. Whilst it can be as frustrating as a huge jigsaw puzzle, it is mostly very satisfying to see order and form emerging out of a random pile of rock. It's also great to start to see a defined boundary at the front of the garden, where it's been a blurred edge or tarmac and soil for months. Sunday, 15 May 2011. Okay, so...
Hillside: Time flies

Diary of our environmentally friendly extension and renovation of a 100 year old cottage. Tuesday, 24 January 2012. It's nearing the end of Jan 2012 already and I've realised I've not posted to this blog for a few months. Not that we've been short of news, after all the block paviour drive is now complete making the front of Hillside look like a normal house at last and not a building site. Diary of our environmentally friendly extension and renovation of a 100 year old cottage. Tuesday, 26 October 2010. Good reason for a bonfire. Okay, so bonfires are not renowned for being particularly great for the environment. Infact there are many environmentalists out there (particularly some members of the AECB http:/ www.aecb.net/. To control the effect of leaf miner moths on our 100 year old Horse Chestnut tree. E branches long before November. There seems to be little that can be done to comba...

Diary of our environmentally friendly extension and renovation of a 100 year old cottage. Saturday, 18 September 2010. Elsewhere in the garden the runner beans are still producing at daunting rate, despite blanching and freezing a load of them and we've finally got a few French beans to enjoy as well. We've pulled the last of the beetroot but still have courgettes growing and leeks in the ground to be harvested later in the year. Thursday, 2 September 2010. A month of sunshine? We've had the solar therma...
