Bures Fire Station

Ures Fire Station was located on land to the left of the garage, which is located opposite the Eight Bells Public House in Colchester Road. History of Fire Service during WW11,1939 - 1945. One problem that became apparent during World War I was that of non-standardisation. Hydrants, stand pipes and hose couplings were a problem when different brigades were working together. So on 22nd May 1941 the National Fire Service was formed to unify the whole of the country and eliminate any operational problems.

Womens Land Army and Timber Corp. Bures accommodated several Land Army girls, those who were not staying at the farms were billeted at Leavenheath. They were transported over to the village each day by truck, from their Hostel to work. Bottom right:- Land Army Girls, taken on a trip with customers of The Horseshoes PH, Darts Club at Southend. The Womens Land Army (WLA). The Womens Timber Corps (WTC). Hostels were built at Lakenheath for 120 girls, Leavenheath 70 girls, Risby 25 girls and other places.

Territorial Army excercises in Bures

Between approximately 1935 and into the 1980`s the Army often. Used Bevills land for exercises. The two top photographs show the Army on exercises during 1935. The top seven sepia photographs show the Territorial Army on manoeuvres around 1938/39. A) not a gun in sight. During 1944 the village set up a Welcome Home Fund. This information has just come to light after 60 yrs of being filed away. The details below are taken from the original Minute Book and associated paperwork. Recorded by the secretary Les Mills. BURES WAR SAVINGS ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE,. A Public Meeting was held on 19th October 1944 in the Victory Hall specifically to consider what could be done to show the village appreciation for those away fighting in the war. About 40 parishioners were present.
