Burravoe Birding

Monday, 18 June 2012. Red-necked Phalaropes (inc video). Lately, these wee birds are certainly proving harder to see! They were seen by myself on almost every visit a few years back, but now they only seem to show every two or three visits! Still plenty to see on Fetlar including Summer plumage GN Divers, Whimbrel, Arctic/Great Skuas etc, so always enjoyable even without the star performers! Not a fantastic video, but my first decent attempt at it! Thursday, 14 June 2012. Tuesday, 29 May 2012. The 'Shetl...

Burravoe Birding: Shetland Wren

http://burravoebirding.blogspot.com/p/shetland-wren.html

The Shetland Wren, ssp 'zetlandicus', is the local variety of the Winter Wren found all over Britain, and a probable incipient species. It's a common resident over most of Shetland, and it's sedentary behaviour makes it unlikely to be found outside these islands. Below are photographs of adult birds;. And Juvenile birds;. Adult at the nest;. Typical nest location, under an overhanging edge;. Below are some sound recordings of 'zetlandicus'. And a photo of the Fair Isle ssp;. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

http://burravoebirding.blogspot.com/2012/06/up-close-and-personal.html

Thursday, 14 June 2012. Just a few photos of the various wildlife in South Yell over the last couple of days! Very cold temperatures and Northerly winds have stopped most of the migrants from passing through, so I've concentrated on the local species instead! The local Black Guillemots have been very approachable, and extremely vocal, but thanks to the noise of the sea and wind, sound recordings are almost impossible. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Sound Recordings (click photo). I can thoroughly re...

Burravoe Birding: Midnight Magic

http://burravoebirding.blogspot.com/2010/08/midnight-magic.html

Monday, 16 August 2010. Of some Petrel ringing going on in Shetland, I thought I'd make some inquiries! All it took was just one phone call, and one text, and I was all set for my first ever bird ringing session. And what a session it was too! I arrived at the destination at 2300hrs, and as I got out the car, the sound of tape lure was already in the air. After a quick hello, I was immediately shown a Leach's Petrel 'in the hand'. One that had just been caught as I arrived! And of course, a Stormie.

Burravoe Birding: Shetland 'Bugs'

http://burravoebirding.blogspot.com/p/shetland-bugs.html

Now I'll be the first to admit I know very little about the insect life around us, but here is a selection of the ones I've been able to photograph locally. If any of the names are missing, and you are able to help me out, please feel free to email. Me There's no saying I've got the rest right either, and all help is gratefully received! Robbie's Northern Exposures: April 2013

http://robbiesnorthernexposures.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Wildlife, Images and Blog from 60 degrees North and the Island of Unst. Tuesday, 30 April 2013. Off Island' - pt 1. I had a few hours 'spare' this morning (17th April) so decided to take a look at the blog and do an update. Checking the date I discovered that I've now been away from home for 3 weeks and what a busy three weeks it has been. Which is always a hit with all of us, more of that later, we also went to Marwell Zoo which has so much there one day doesn't do it justice. We left in plenty of time ...

Robbie's Northern Exposures: July 2014

http://robbiesnorthernexposures.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Wildlife, Images and Blog from 60 degrees North and the Island of Unst. Thursday, 17 July 2014. Gannets Galore - Part 1. The 1st visit this year was on 19th Feb and already there were lots of birds on the cliffs; that said, I took a visit a week later and some areas were devoid of birds. The Neap 19th Feb 2014. Returning again around a week later, there was a lot more activity and this was to only increase as the weeks went by. Looking north towards Clingra Stack (centre top). Gannets over 'The Greing'.

Robbie's Northern Exposures: June 2013

http://robbiesnorthernexposures.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Wildlife, Images and Blog from 60 degrees North and the Island of Unst. Monday, 17 June 2013. On the 5th May, my first Arctic Tern of the year returned to the shore at Ordaal and was a really welcome sight and gave the feeling that spring had finally returned. For a few days after the 7th, we had up to four Tree Sparrows in the garden daily - which made a nice change to the ever present House Sparrows. Common Sandpiper at Skaw. Grey-headed Wagtail at Skaw. Marsh Warbler at Skaw. Probably the best Spring ...

Wildlife, Images and Blog from 60 degrees North and the Island of Unst. Monday, 29 December 2014. Last post of 2014. Here we are, Christmas is almost over and so is 2014, but what a year it has been! Feb 27th from Ordaal. March 26th over Flugga. On the bird front, I was quite lucky to have found 3 BBs ( 'British Birds' rarities), two at Haroldswick and one at Skaw (Yellow-rumped Warbler, Citrine Wagtail and Spotted Sandpiper at Skaw) - links here. http://robbiesnorthernexposures.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Wildlife, Images and Blog from 60 degrees North and the Island of Unst. Sunday, 11 May 2014. Our Easter holiday this year was going to be a return trip to North Zealand, Denmark to the farm owned by Catriona's step-sister, Selma. It's been around ten years since I last visited and were going to stay there for almost two weeks from the end of March. Close to the rear port side of the ship. And its Viking museum, Legoland and Tivoli Gardens amongst others. Below are a few pictures from our trips out. In 20...

Goldcrests « Birdingfaroes

https://birdingfaroes.wordpress.com/2014/10/08/goldcrests

Easterly winds have been dominating for a few days now. This equals the arrival of birds. I used about one hour birding yesterday and found 50 Goldcrests, 1 Marsh Warbler, 1 Reed Warbler, 1 Reed Bunting, Siskin, Wood Dove, some Blackcaps, about 40 Bramblings, 2 Barn Swallows and Common Sandpiper. Obviously many migrants had arrived. So I has quite excited to go to Svínoy this morning especially after receiving news from Mike P. about extreme rarities on Unst – Firecrest and Treecreeper. How is it possibl...

Shetland Misfit: Least Feast

Monday, 19 September 2011. Just as it was being generally accepted that the bird had bogged off, it turns up on a freshwater pool that we had all walked past about an hour before! Stunning views eventually as it fed around the edge being dwarfed by Rock Pipits. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). 2009 Garden List Highlights. Arctic Warbler Scatness Aug 2016. Burra’s Redruth Gaol, was the first built outside Adelaide. It housed some thirty prisoners, of both genders, and later became a girls reformatory. Extracts from the Doctors journal are contained in the gaol, with ailments such as unable to walk to Adelaide and silly, a little or venereal eruption leaving much to the imagination. Medicine seems to have come a long way! Home for the world famous ‘Monster Mine’ Burra, what a town! Very few mid-nineteenth century settlements have been preserved like Burra&#...
