Saint Modwen’s Church. Saint Peter’s Church. Civic Arms and Regalia. 1857 White’s Directory. The above picture shows the best known reproduced image of Burton Abbey at its most impressive. It is my colourization of a 1661 engraving by W. Hollar that appears in numerous sources and can be found on a plaque of the outside wall of the Coopers Shopping Centre close to the ‘Market Entrance’. Select page to view:. Saint Modwen’s Church. Saint Peter’s Church. Civic Arms and Regalia. 1857 White’s Directory. 8216;Bladon Castle’, just outside of Newton Solney, is not really a castle at all but an extravagant joke by a well-known local landowner that went very wrong! Hoskins had risen through the ranks from being a successful solicitor with a number of lucrative business interests to become the High Baliff of Burton upon Trent. Burton on Trent Local History » Peel Mill
http://www.burton-on-trent.org.uk/category/surviving/peel
Saint Modwen’s Church. Saint Peter’s Church. Civic Arms and Regalia. 1857 White’s Directory. Peel Mill stands almost inconsequentially next to the river in Winshill, at the bottom of Mill Hill Lane. It is easy to pass it by without much notice but it has a fascinating story to tell. So what about the most famous Robert Peel who was Home Secretary, Chancellor of the Exchequer and (twice) Prime Minister best known as the founder of the Police Force? In fact yes, he was the mill owner’s Grandson!
