After some of the strong winds last month one of the striking gears, the gear which controls whether the shutters are open or closed, was bent and the shutters were forced closed. Abseiling off the top of the mill, reattaching the striking gear after being bent back. The device used to bend the striking back into shape. Links to this post. Thursday, 8 January 2015. Thursday, 8 January 2015. Update - 8 January 2015. The new girders shown on the last update were successfully fitted by the mill team. The new girders have stopped the distortion that used to occur as the cap turned in the wind. The new girders installed in the cap either side of the brake wheel. The two guide wheels at the back of the cap. Close up on one of the guide wheels. The next job for the mill team will be to prepare the mill stones in order to start milling flour. Sunday, 1 September 2013. The Cap Goes On. The cap of Stevens' Mill was lifted back on top of the mill tower on the morning of 29th August 2013. We are very grateful to our neighbours in Mill Close for putting up with the enormous crane being parked in their street for half a day. Special thanks to the neighbours who allowed people to stand on their drives and lawns to get a better view of the cap lift. Photos below. Video at very bottom of the page. The temporary roof is removed. View from Saxon Drive.

Wednesday, 29 May 2013. More Restoration Photos - May 2013. More photos of the restoration work that has been taking place this month. The repairs are on schedule, with the cap and sails due to go back on in late September - early October. Click on a photo to see a larger version. Oldest photos at the bottom. Newest at the top. Cladding the cap with cedar begins. Cap frame with repairs. Rotten window to be replaced. New bricks replacing old bricks that had come loose in an old repair. Links to this post.

Friday, 22 November 2013. Restoration Update - 22nd Nov 2013. Our millwrights have nearly finished the work on the windmill sails and now hope be be able to attach them to the mill sometime in the week commencing 8th December. The millwrights will need a couple of days to prepare the sails on site before they go on. Attaching the sails to the mill is a weather dependant operation - ideally a calm, dry day.
