Fiber glassing the joints on the bottom of a boat helps seal the joints to prevent leaking and helps protect the edges of the bottom from wear and bumps. Many builders fiberglass the entire bottom of the boat although others say this just makes a bowl out of a wooden boat that captures moisture and causes rot. I’ll be fiber glassing the joints only for now! View from the stern:.

There are many ways to scarf wood, I used a power planer, a hand planer and finished off with the sander:. We recently purchased an old 1978 Evinrude 35 hp outboard for the skiff – it pushes the boat along pretty well after replacing various gaskets, the thermostat, water deflectors, spark plugs, water pump and prop:. The outboard tiller handle interferes with the stern – time for some stern mods! Port side has been cut down and the starboard side is in process:. Templates will be used to help cut the correct size plywood to make the enclosure and use treated 2″ x 4″ lumber to frame it up with some of the left over plywood for the decking, flooring and aft bulkhead panel.
