Early Recordings of Charles Ives' Music. In response to my recent report of early recordings of the music of Edgard Varèse. Longtime blog reader David Federman asked me if I had this pioneering 1951 record of Charles Ives' music. Not only do I have it, I had already transferred it for presentation here. Ives in his back yard, 1950. These and the other orchestral works are led by Vladimir Cherniavsky. I had not encountered his name before, so did some research. Online sources generally suggest tha...I bel...

Big 10-Inch Record: Morton Gould, Oiltown, U.S.A., Plus Reups
http://big10inchrecord.blogspot.com/2015/05/morton-gould-oiltown-usa-plus-reups.html
Morton Gould, Oiltown, U.S.A., Plus Reups. I have been out sick for a number of weeks, but now that I am restored to health, what better way to celebrate than to address some of the many requests I've received lately. The sound here is good, but there is some background rustle from my early pressing. As Columbia sometimes did with its "better" artists, this appeared on the Masterworks label. Also on today's docket:. Oiltown, U.S.A. I've had a couple requests for the soundtrack to this 1953 film produced ...

Bill Frawley Sings the Old Ones, Plus Reups. A quick post tonight to present one new item and a bunch of reups and remasters. The new offering is by Bill Frawley, usually billed as William Frawley, and perhaps even better known as Fred Mertz of the 50s smash TV show I Love Lucy. Was still on the air. Bill/William/Fred had little voice left at that time, but much style. You'll like this despite yourself. Here are the reups and remasters, by request:. Brahms - Piano Concerto No. 2 (Serkin, PO-Ormandy).

Soundtrack Reups and Remasters. A few of these soundtrack reups are requests, but most of them are just the result of me wanting to improve the sound on some of my old projects. These are all remastered, and the sound is generally much improved. Links to all items are in the comments to this post. The excellent promo record for the 1958 CBS television presentation of Cole Porter's Aladdin, with an intro by the composer. Flame and the Flesh. Sunny Side of the Street. Christmas 1955 with Beverly Sills. At Christmas 1955, the 26-year-old soprano Beverly Sills had already been a performer for more than 20 years and had just made her debut at the New York City Opera. Her bel canto singing was beginning to attract notice, and the New York architectural firm of Fordyce and Hamby thought it might be a good idea to engage her for a LP to be sent to its clients as a holiday gift. This one-sided, 10-inch album is the result. 1956 photo by Carl Van Vechten. This gem is courtesy...

Jackie and Roy - Sing! My last post started a series devoted to recordings by the great vocal duo of Jackie Cain and Roy Kral. The response was excellent, so here is one of Jackie and Roy's records made for George Wein's Storyville label. This LP came out in both 10-inch and 12-inch versions; my copy is of the larger format. The artists circa 1955. As was the case with the Charlie Ventura record below, Kral contributed several compositions of his own. I particularly enjoy "Hook, Line and Snare," whic...

Isabel Bigley and Stephen Douglass. Isabel Bigley and Stephen Douglass starred in some of the biggest Broadway hits of the 1950s, without ever becoming household names. This budget-label release allows you to hear them in some of the best-known Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes, individually and in duet. Bigley originated the role of Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls. And then Jeanie in R&H's Me and Juliet. She retired from the stage shortly after this record was made in the late 50s. The LP is dated 1957 on the...

Big 10-Inch Record: Oiltown, U.S.A.
http://big10inchrecord.blogspot.com/2009/08/oiltown-usa.html
Oiltown, U.S.A. USA was one of the first films made by the organization of the popular evangelist Billy Graham. This 1953 film was set in Houston and was the story of a hard-driving oilman who finds God. Graham was set on using the popular arts as a publicity tool for his ministry, and he was able to get RCA to issue this 10-inch LP containing several musical numbers and one of his addresses. Heard in an earlier post; much different from the Bible-based comments of fellow evangelist Myron Augsberger.

Big 10-Inch Record: Paul Weston's Melodies for a Sentimental Mood
http://big10inchrecord.blogspot.com/2015/04/paul-westons-melodies-for-sentimental.html
Paul Weston's Melodies for a Sentimental Mood. I had a request for more from the estimable and inescapable arranger Paul Weston, so here we have his Melodies for a Sentimental Mood,. These danceable, easy listening sides make a great contrast to the Elliott Carter sonatas I just presented, which may have many virtues, but certainly will not inspire you to roll up the rugs for a sock hop. The sonics on this 10-inch LP are most vivid. 10 April, 2015 00:12. Https:/ www.mediafire.com/? 10 April, 2015 08:01.
