November 7, 2012. Lessons from a Softball Season. My girls both play softball. In our city’s recreational league, girls can start playing at the age of 5, and the divisions break down by age: 6 and under (6U), 8 and under (8U), 10U, 12U, etc. Em is now in her fifth season, and El is in her second. As parents, we cheer for a base hit, a decent throw, and sometimes just for paying attention to the game (instead of digging in the dirt.) Shouts of Nice swing! Softball ready, girls! And Put your glove back on!

January 2, 2013. As much as I love Thanksgiving and Christmas, I really love New Year’s Day. I usually spend it watching the Rose Parade and lots of college football, relaxing with my family, and eating our traditional New Year’s food. (In our house, that consists of homemade chicken nuggets and bean dipyummy! After the harried and frenetic pace of the Christmas season the last-minute shopping, the baking, cleaning the house for visitors New Year’s Day feels like a chance to finally catch my breath.

May 10, 2013. My grandma is dying. The hospice nurse has told my mom that they don't expect her to make it through the weekend. She is receiving morphine to keep her comfortable. When I was younger, I used to worry that she would die suddenly and unexpectedly, with no chance to say goodbye. I worried that she would not live to see me grow up, get married and have children. But she did, and then some. I'll miss you, too, Grandma. Too Hot to Handle.
