What are Fixed Gears? 2nd October 2014 by Butterfly Customs. Fixed gear bicycles, fixies for short, are bicycles with a fixed gear. But What The Fixed does this mean? Basically, it means the bike has a fixed cog, as opposed to a bike with a freewheel which gives you the ability to coast. So when you pedal forward, the bike will go forward. If you pedal backwards, the bike will go backwards. Simple isn’t it? Simplicity is a recurring theme in fixed gears. What if riding with a fixed gear is not for you?
