En route to California on the winter solstice, we unexpectedly found ourselves stopped for a night in a Roseburg hotel, narrowly avoiding six hours of being stranded on a snowbound I-5 like some of our fellow motorists. After a 14-hour detour down Highway 101, we were at Grannie and Grampa's house in time for Santa's Christmas morning surprises. We also wandered into Roaring Camp, a stone's throw away.
