Sunday, April 06, 2008. I've been thinking about modern life and how as an unintentional result of modern convenience we lose our vital connections with the earth and its cycles. I've been reading Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Occasional thoughts about a distinctly Unitarian spirituality and the intersections of that spirituality with endeavors personal, social, and political. Friday, July 10, 2015. Slaves to the Free Market. Found this in my draft posts from 2006, so I am posting it now:. Recently I came across an excellent reprint of an essay by the economist John Kenneth Galbraith. In the Atlantic Monthly. I'll keep short, because I want to let you read Galbraith's insightful summary of our shared concern:. Here is the full article. April 16, 2006. Kevin, you comments are on the mark. However, I am less concerned about liberals' understanding the virtues of capitalism a...

Tuesday, October 06, 2009. The Virtues of Being The Worst. I've recently joined a few new activities where I was clearly and markedly the worst by a large margin. The first is I've joined the "back-up" choir at my UU. The second is I went out for some pick-up Ultimate Frisbee. In both cases, there was a sense of anxiety that I might be (OK, was) dragging down the group. It can be tough to know that you are the bottom end of that bell curve, scraping against the right edge of the graph.

If you can eat, drink, pee, and poo without incident, you have much cause for satisfaction. The best way to get our needs met is to articulate them clearly, repeatedly, and, if necessary, with volume. It's in our nature to learn, grow, and try new things, with our own interest as our best guide. Can't wait for the next 7 months!

Friday, August 28, 2015. The Need to Say No. To set aside the expectations of others and the roles we have assumed and shout out the contrary, more direct and more honest truth we harbor within. I think we all have a hunger for unrefined truths, especially when they have been long suppressed. Sunday, August 09, 2015. One of my areas of greatest discomfort with Christian theology has been the concept of original sin. To say that human nature is inherently inclined towards the evil seemed to me unfair ...

Sunday, January 20, 2008. The Need for Regulation in an Increasingly Complex World. The trend in this modern world is towards continually greater complexity. In a world where the choices that face us are ever more complex, there is a great need for regulation and a variety of mediating institutions that can provide citizens with meaningful information and useful judgments and evaluations. Sunday, March 18, 2007. Serving the World by Being More You. It's not a new idea, and it's not an original idea, but I'm very enamoured with this idea that has been rekindled in me recently thanks to the help of a dear friend. The idea is to find our vocation or calling by seeking where our personal gifts happen to meet the worlds' needs. It's a balancing act - looking outside to see what the world is needing, but also looking inside to see what it is you have within you that is inherently generous.
