Right now, Congress is debating the future of our transportation system. Tell your leaders to invest at least $5 billion per year in faster and more frequent trains to more places. For decades, transportation priorities have been lopsided, focused almost entirely on driving. That system is clearly broken, with declining gas tax receipts unable to meet the growing cost of highway construction.

Trains offer services and amenities not seen on other transportation options. Train transportation offers many of the same conveniences of driving, such as hourly departures and easy access, as well as conveniences of plane trips, such as fast trip times and productive time during travel. Additionally, trains offer spacious seating, café cars with meal services and lower costs. Trains also promote walkable cities, which reduces energy consumption.

We need modern to trains to connect our cities and regions, make our economy stronger and reduce our reliance on foreign oil. A modern system would:. Serve 80% of Americans within twenty-five years with high-performance passenger rail. Draw major metropolitan areas within 3 hours of each other. Offer frequent daily departures. Analysis conducted by the Federal Railroad Administration demonstrates that $5 billion per year is the minimum required to move passenger rail forward.
