So while Susan and I paid a lot of attention to the avian activity around the creek, Lily snagged about 10 pounds of minnows with her little net. In the heat of the day we came upon a family of Northern Rough-winged Swallows, six juveniles, plus adults feeding their brood. Thursday, June 28, 2012. Monday, June 25, 2012. My Witt's End: The Golden Daze of Spring Migration
http://mywittsend.blogspot.com/2013/05/the-golden-daze-of-spring-migration.html
Thoughts and ideas about what happens out of doors. Friday, May 03, 2013. The Golden Daze of Spring Migration. Flock of American Golden-plovers in various stages of molt. Although it threatens my status as a curmudgeon, I too-often say there are no bad days for birding; some are just better than others. And then there are the days that are pure gold. Blackburnian Warblers have that strange way of looking at you that makes you think . Earlier in the day we had tracked down an elusive flock of American Gol...

Thoughts and ideas about what happens out of doors. Wednesday, May 22, 2013. If Ornithology Doesn’t Work For You . FDR's bird collection tucked into a corner was tougher to find than a Kirtland's Warbler. The tour of FDR’s home is something not to be missed. Amidst the collection of FDR’s sailboat prints and other navy memorabilia, tucked back in a corner that none of the other people on the tour noticed, was a cupboard filled with bird specimens. My Witt's End: Ghost of a Chance
http://mywittsend.blogspot.com/2013/04/ghost-of-chance.html
Thoughts and ideas about what happens out of doors. Monday, April 22, 2013. Ghost of a Chance. I was unsure if the thundering noise was our house being hit by a meteorite or if the diamond had dropped out of Susan's engagement ring. Whichever, it surely meant disaster. I dashed upstairs and came face-to-face with a ghost bird. Well, it was the image of a ghost at least. The near-perfect silhouette of a Mourning Dove was etched onto our picture window. Pat discovered the Acopian Bird Savers,. The idea is ,.

Thoughts and ideas about what happens out of doors. Sunday, April 07, 2013. Male Wood Duck practicing the Hokey-Pokey. Winter loosened its death grip on northeast Ohio today long enough for some of us to do some birding wearing less than three pairs of mittens and two coats. Susan and I opted for our 30,000-acre backyard, AKA the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, to see if spring migration is truly on the wing. Tree Swallows on a date. Ya gotta be tough to live here. Male and female Wood Ducks. I’ve h...

Something Blue: My trusty Saturn. Okay, in the Something New spot above I had intended to write, LeConte’s Sparrow. Now that I’ve given away the end of this story, if you want to see a picture of LeConte’s Sparrow, open your dictionary to the word nemesis, I’m sure its picture is there. Jerry and I walked the trai...

My Witt's End: December 2012
http://mywittsend.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Thoughts and ideas about what happens out of doors. Saturday, December 15, 2012. Old Moon in the New Moon’s Arms. It was one of those evenings, two nights ago. Half my brain said, “No way can you get that shot.” Another half of my brain said, “Tough, but doable.” And the third half of my brain said, “Better to live life as a wolf than a shitty sheep dog.”. It was a classic three-day moon; the old moon in the new moon’s arms; earthshine helped define the nearby sphere. Pretty, but so what. Well,. Center f...

I read in the paper, several days after the fact, that Black Friday’s online shoppers spent about a billion bucks; Monday’s crowd $pent another 1.5 billon and there’s more to come- or go. A skulking Clapper Rail provided an excellent photo op. Perfect camo colors of the American Bittern. A Wood Stork positions its lunch. Tuesday, November 27, 2012. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
