brushwood thicket: June 2012
http://brushwoodthicket.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, 7 June 2012. It’s been and gone, but a few thoughts on the Jubilee concert, when the palace facade was transformed into a laser spectacular, the Mall shimmered with the flecks of a thousand lighters, and most of the line-up seemed to be called ‘Sir’. Madness’ ‘gig of the century’ on Buck Pal roof saw the house’s imposing frontage transformed into a dazzling and witty light show - ‘good God, what are they doing to my house? From one point of view it looks like squandering on luxury in a world fu...

brushwood thicket: Would Jesus wear a Santa hat?
http://brushwoodthicket.blogspot.com/2012/12/would-jesus-wear-santa-hat_26.html
Wednesday, 26 December 2012. Would Jesus wear a Santa hat? Leafing through the Radio Times, there’s a cornucopia of eye-catching spreads featuring assorted celebs talking about what they want for, or think about, Christmas. They’re all donning Santa costumes of one flavour or another – that perennial neutral safe lowest common denominator crowd pleaser theme. How do we begin to reconcile these ‘parallel universes’? Wednesday, December 26, 2012. May the baby Mirtha give you a BMX :-). The Long Walk Home.

brushwood thicket: February 2012

Thursday, 23 February 2012. Maus: 'a brutally moving work of art'. I’ve recently been 'bowled over' from quite an unexpected source - the graphic novel (comic strip format) collection ‘The Complete Maus’. In the foreground, the mouse couple’s shiny eyes stare out from anxious grey faces, straining to be strong, noses twitching, alert to danger. Both vulnerable and powerless in the face of such malevolence - but still he assumes the role of protector. Thursday, February 23, 2012. Links to this post.

brushwood thicket: January 2013
http://brushwoodthicket.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 2 January 2013. The comedy and politics of a family Christmas. My last day with family in Lymington on the south coast, so a brief reflection on some memorable moments. Now the third word in the phrase about ‘familiarity breeding’ is too harsh here, but that doesn’t stop the old truism having applicability in family situations. Family, familiarity – the words are hardly a million miles apart are they? Wednesday, January 02, 2013. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

brushwood thicket: December 2012
http://brushwoodthicket.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Monday, 31 December 2012. Christmas is over. what now for 2013? I read an intriguing piece in The Times this weekend by columnist Giles Coren, called ‘Peace on Earth, so long as you keep the receipt’. But that universal spiritual yearning, if not stifled or squandered on lesser things, beckons us on an inner voyage of discovery. And once you start ‘getting into’ faith, it's possible to develop. An appetite for the breadth and depths of vision and joy it offers. It can. After reading Coren’s piece, ...

Tuesday, 21 June 2011. Irony – there’s a feeling in late June that we’re still only just entering summer… Wimbledon's begun, Glastonbury approaches – and yet the longest day of the year has already arrived. Happily the warming effect of lengthened days trails behind, casting its balm over the coming months (seas won’t properly warm up for a while yet). Tuesday, June 21, 2011. Links to this post. Friday, 3 June 2011. Mammon, 'mother monster' and the marketing machine. Friday, June 03, 2011.

brushwood thicket: Senna - a life lived on the edge
http://brushwoodthicket.blogspot.com/2011/07/senna-life-lived-on-edge.html
Tuesday, 12 July 2011. Senna - a life lived on the edge. Saw this film last Friday, chronicling the career of the master Brazilian Formula 1 driver. Ayrton Senna. A name whose stylishness sounds specially crafted for a star. An absorbing tale. There are few things I’d be less likely to watch on TV than an F1 race, but I knew from the reviews that this was a film whose themes transcended its subject matter. Tuesday, July 12, 2011. And if he had survived, no doubt folk would call it a miracle. And parallel...

Monday, 30 May 2011. Faith, hope and Lady Gaga. On Saturday I picked up a copy of last week’s Telegraph review supplement with a picture of a ghostly young female face with pouting red lips, framed with straight peroxide hair. The caption, ‘Excess all areas’. The sub heading: ‘Lady Gaga is the world’s biggest, brashest pop star - but… does her music measure up? 8217; I read the article by Neil McCormick. I don’t think it has to be. It can’t be easy to restrain the whispers of vanity on su...On a personal...
