US Highway 290

Built in 1927, US Highway 290 was built entirely in Texas from San Antonio and three hundred miles west to meet US Highway 80. US 290 was the main artery until Interstate 10 was completed during the 1970s. Were built all along the route. Calera had their own tourist camp. It was the tourist camp that attracted some unsavory characters during the 1930s. The famous John Dillinger gang laid low at Calera. Example of Tourist Camp on Route 66. Essential element for life, water drew native Indians and later Anglo settlers to Calera. Phantom Lake was the source of life at Calera for hundreds of years. Native Indians grew corn and pumpkins. Primitive tools and weapons have been found through out the area of Calera, Toyahvale, Brogado and Balmorhea. With the water gone the once 2000 acres of cultivated land returned to its natural state. Mesquite and catclaw has replaced cotton and alfalfa. Water only flowed for a short time.

Like all growing communities Calera residents eventually decided that they needed a church building, the structure was made of adobe and rock. Although the community was financially poor they banded together to construct the adobe structure( see Lupe Renteria's Story. After being abandoned the building became occupied by bats, cows, horses and other creatures. In 2002 Calera Foundation was formed to restore Mission Mary. First Holy Communion for little Angels.

In the fall of 1933, John Dillinger and 7 other members of his gang stayed at Phantom Lake Camp to evade authorities that were looking for them. They stayed for several weeks, and rented a couple of cabins from Charlie Splittgarber. They were reported to be very nice and generous folks, but did some odd things as you can read below. Phantom Lake and Cave. Phantom Lake appeared on maps as early as 1893. (See below). It was a popular fishing and swimming spot for the local and tourists who stayed at the nearby tourist camp. The water flowed from an underground aquifer, and out of the cave mouth.
