After researching the author, Sherman Alexie, I discovered that he actually grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation (Spokane was used in the story). As a child, he was ostracized by his peers, becoming the brunt of other kids jokes on the reservation. The character, Thomas Builds-the-Fire, thus epitomizes Sherman Alexie. God's love for a special little girl. I am happy to report that as of today we start a new chapter in the life of little Callie. One without seizures, one without trips to the neurologist and most importantly, one where she is able to be just a normal little girl! Since the treatment reset her brain we have seen some remarkable development in Callie.
