BlueTDI: Solar Powered Van
http://bluetdi.blogspot.com/2012/08/the-solar-road.html
A blog about the conversion of a battered builder's van to a fully kitted out camper. Split charge unit. I don't have much in the line of electrics to be honest. I have:. 9 x LED spotlights. 1 x halogen strip light. 1 x electric cool box. 1 x digital voltmeter display. 2 x water pumps for sink and shower. 1 x small 240V inverter - the biggest drawer of power when on. A marine switch which in addition to controlling various of the above has two 'cigarette lighter' sockets for charging phones etc. In UK fo...

A blog about the conversion of a battered builder's van to a fully kitted out camper. I went for the 42L Vitrifigo 12/24 compressor fridge, there was a sale on and it was a little cheaper than the Waeco equivalent. Side note for Republic of Ireland readers: I was quoted an incredible 216 GBP ("Europe delivery charges") to get a 42L compressor fridge sent over to the Republic from the UK. I found a service called. The 42L Vitrifigo is a relatively small fridge which means it fits into the. Much of the van...

A blog about the conversion of a battered builder's van to a fully kitted out camper. I was reluctant to lose the height clearance the van had gained by fitting larger wheels but I found the transporter on normal springs 'wallows' in corners and generally behaves like a van rather than a car. After a lot of research I bought Sportline Eibach springs from Breeze Volkswagen. The van on steels, not lowered compared to lowered on 18"s. Converting a Van to a Camper in Ireland. A blog about the conversion of a battered builder's van to a fully kitted out camper. Side Folding Double Bed. Someone asked me recently to add some more photos of the side folding bed so. I've written this post to show the final bed that I came up with. T. He previous blog post on the bed when it was a day van is still on the site here. S I wanted to have a rear kitchen under the tailgate I could not fit a regular rock and roll bed. They don't allow enough room at the back in a SWB for a kitchen. As you...

A blog about the conversion of a battered builder's van to a fully kitted out camper. I started my rear unit today. This is a floor to ceiling unit which will go behind the bed bench. First off I cut out the inner upstanding panel from a piece of waste hardboard. It takes a while to get the upstanding panels right due to the curve on the side of the van and the ceiling. To be honest the floor is not exactly level either. Then I carpeted the panel - there are more images of this in the carpeting. First of...

A blog about the conversion of a battered builder's van to a fully kitted out camper. Headlining Removal and Recovering. Now with the rear unit. This tool could save you hours. To remove the internal lights just pull down on the grey light surround; this pops the light off, unplug and remove. The long trims separating the ceiling panels just pull straight off. The grab handle needs a lot less persuading, simply pop the caps on the edges and unscrew the screws. Carpet and went about gluing it straight on.

A blog about the conversion of a battered builder's van to a fully kitted out camper. I bought a front fog light kit off Xtremevan. And installed it recently. The fog lights work only when the parking lights / low beams are switched on so there is a little bit of wiring to do but nothing too tricky. Here's how I did it. First off I removed the bumper blanks from the bumper. Then I cut a hole in each trim piece with a drill mounted hole saw. Next I fitted the fog light loom. To get the loom into the inter...

A blog about the conversion of a battered builder's van to a fully kitted out camper. I wanted to get the full window effect on the van as it would then look more like an MPV and less like a commercial vehicle. This is often, but not always, better for toll bridges and ferries etc. So I bought a couple of rear windows off Kiravans. In the UK with a fitting kit. To prime and glue them I followed their instructions so no point repeating them here, it's a simple process. 9 x LED spotlights. A marine switch ...

A blog about the conversion of a battered builder's van to a fully kitted out camper. Converting a Van to a Camper in Ireland. OK guys, the latest is that Dolmen and Stuart insurance companies require 1.8m on the inside height of the van meaning a small van needs a popup or raised roof. The Motor Caravan Club will insure small vans BUT they echo the Revenue requirements of internal living space (see below). They will not insure a van with a rear kitchen. Will help arrange insurance if you are member.
