My 27 Month Adventure in Africa
Candid Cameroon: April 2012
http://cameroonchronicled.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
My 27 Month Adventure in Africa. Tuesday, April 10, 2012. So I’ve finally forced myself to sit myself down and get out a long overdue blog post. Here is a quick synopsis of the happenings in Batouri over the past two months. Back to my third-world self…. Ever make a decision that was extremely tough to make, but knew in the end it was what in the long run would be best for you? The lovely Julia and I. To say it straight, I think she's pretty cool. A great support to have in the East. Took a trip with Mik...

My 27 Month Adventure in Africa. Wednesday, August 10, 2011. Shifting into Second Year. La femme blanche qui dance avec les enfants". The white women who dances with children. And, i've already started back at work! The reaction may sound mean of me, but its a good step just knowing them. And hey that's what i'm here to help them improve on. Those kind of questions will keep me coming back! Monday, August 1, 2011. Life as of Late. Finally back to Batouri! Nice to be home and be settled. Although to g...

My 27 Month Adventure in Africa. Sunday, May 22, 2011. Will Work For Sanity. After about another four months, i've again left the east and am now waiting in Yaounde for vacation to begin! And that was my past few months. Janelle, you can help me with my business? If I can't convince them, I try to just direct them places where they can focus on saving the money they do have. So, you're a small economic development volunteer, that means you come with money, right? It didn't take much to convince them, and...

My 27 Month Adventure in Africa. Friday, June 1, 2012. The Beginning of the End. Hopefully it’s obvious. I will miss the hek out of this place. Now to some photos already! This is my training group. We arrived in Cameroon together in June 2010. We are gathering together for the last time to kick off our Close-of-Service (COS) Conference at our Director LaHoma's house. Look at all those Easties! All are not even pictured. Since I have been in the East we have doubled in the number of volunteers. This mont...

My 27 Month Adventure in Africa. Thursday, June 30, 2011. If I can only say all what I wish, but here goes. So, what happens when you live in Africa and one of your best friends whom you have known since sixth grade gets married? No question, I go home! As soon as I landed, things kicked off right away! Two frequent questions I received: "Are you having fun/excited to go back? And "would you do it all over again? Reconnecting with family and friends and receiving their support I know will help me through...

Michelle in Cameroon: Mile 24 of a Marathon
http://michellestravels.blogspot.com/2013/02/mile-24-of-marathon.html
Sunday, February 17, 2013. Mile 24 of a Marathon. After Mayo Darle, we went on a 12 hour bus ride on an unpaved road. It was an experience involving 3 flat tires and stops for prayer. But luckily we made in one piece although we were turned an interesting shade of orange from all the dust. During the ceremony the priest spoke mostly in the local dialect which was interesting to hear even though I could only understand one word of it! Kids dancing at the reception. The couple walking towards the reception.

Saturday, September 24, 2011. My Life in an African Village (Plus Some Interesting Anecdotes). Then I take my bucket bath, which is essentially a bucket full of water and I use a goblet. I remember I was in Fulfulde class once and the rain started and we had to stop the class because we couldn’t hear the teacher anymore. (After that 3 of us decided that running in the rain sounded like fun, and we got drenched! But it was a good time! Friday, September 16, 2011. Settling In and First Few Weeks at Post.
Michelle in Cameroon: December 2012

Friday, December 14, 2012. Although it was only 5 students, change happens little by little here). But like I say one day you have a great day teaching and the next day it’s just awful. But fortunately even though something bad can happen, there will always be something that can turn my day around. But either way I am excited to be able to go en brousse with the nurses, it seems like the stereotypical aide work that one does, which I think will be interesting. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Michelle in Cameroon: October 2011
http://michellestravels.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 24, 2011. A Little Bit Out of the Ordinary. Because I had to leave so early Monday, I decided to leave Bertoua a bit earlier than normal, which was lucky because I saw what has to be the craziest thing ever and honestly I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t had seen it with my own eyes. Unfortunately I didn’t have my camera, so you’ll just have to take my word for it! On the way back to my village I kept seeing people carrying cassiers. So on Monday, I showed up bright and early for the...
Michelle in Cameroon: Time Keeps Marching On

Friday, November 30, 2012. Time Keeps Marching On. This means that I know longer have to hand fill out the grades for 300 plus students. In the beginning of November I went to Dschang or “the Paris of Cameroon”, in the West Region of Cameroon, known for its university, lake (with paddle boats! Not exactly the lake that we originally wanted, but it was interesting to see nonetheless. After some more negotiating we made it the intended lake, which was stunning and well worth the effort. As of right now, my...

Monday, June 10, 2013. The Hardest Job You’ll Ever Love. I am currently sitting on the bus going from Yaounde to Di. A community garden that I helped plant in a friends' village 2.5 months ago. Look at how tall the trees are already! Eddie came to my goodbye party in village (If you look close enough you can see my band for my moto burn). Me with my favorite colleagues. The computer teacher and the sports teacher. Hanging out with ostriches in my village, no big deal. That is where I do my laundry. Epilo...

Saturday, March 10, 2012. Update - Teaching, Parties, and Time. Well I know it’s been a while since I have been able to update my blog on what I have been up to. Well for starters everyone in my stage went to Limbe, in the South West, for IST. We all stayed at a hotel, and unlike last year, we were not help up at a bar by machetes! So all in all it was a success! Limbe was a lot of fun, great seafood (yes mom I actually like fish now! I am not a doctor! It was great for everyone to be together for Christ...

Wednesday, June 20, 2012. Well I can’t believe that it’s finally here, my one year anniversary of being in country! For our one year anniversary, myself and a couple of friends went to a World Cup Qualifying game, Cameroon vs the DRC. It was a great time and was a great end to an awesome year in Cameroon. Our first day in Cameroon, we weren’t allowed to go to a game, so it was great to actually have the chance to go this time. Even better was that Cameroon won! After hanging out in Ossing, I went to Mamf...
Michelle in Cameroon: Allez Les Lions
http://michellestravels.blogspot.com/2013/06/allez-les-lions.html
Monday, June 10, 2013. Fully supporting their team as well. In the end, Cameroon won, I could not tell you the score, I do know that Eto’o scored at least one goal. But I will always remember the feeling of being amid the chaos, yet feeling a part of it all. Tree that fell down in the middle of the national highway. Volunteers waiting for the game to start. Got to borrow a flag. Kid selling peanuts in Limbe. At a bar in Douala. Tracy, my friend from America visiting my village. View my complete profile.

My 27 Month Adventure in Africa. Thursday, October 18, 2012. Epilogue: A Series of Adjustments. Upon inspiration, ok and a few requests, it was brought to my attention that I have never actually "finished" this blog. I'm thinking its only fitting for the consistent amount I wrote throughout this entire experience its time I did. And what an experience it was! As it always is, in hindsight it went by really fast. It seems sometimes, was I ever even there? Three months out, and I'm. From the tap. I can...

Friday, October 19, 2012. Namibia has got to be one of our favourite countries so far – we spent only about one week there which was not even close to enough. We arrived in Windoek and met up with some PCVs there who were doing their midservice conference. They took us to a place that served cocktails out of jam jars and teapots and then all you can eat pizza! We went out to Swakopmund which is on the beach – about 5 hours away from the capital. Most PCVs have to hitchhike just to get to and from post.
