the campin' Johansons

Friday, October 28, 2016. Yukon and I explored a part of the mountains we hadn't been to yet, a neat stretch of the South Platte River that cuts through the terrain called Eleven Mile Canyon. Rain falling on Pike's Peak to the east. Dog on the Mount. Dog is my copilot. Great view of a distant range. There are so many individual ranges within the Rockies I have a hard time keeping track. Deer at a bend in the river. Saturday, October 15, 2016. Wednesday, October 5, 2016. Yesterday Yukon and I went for a h...

the campin' Johansons: May 2016

http://campinjohansons.blogspot.com/2016_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, May 28, 2016. The Incline is a public trail that used to be a cable car line supporting the construction of pipelines on Pike's Peak. The old railroad ties have become the steps on the trail. It notoriously gains 2,000 vertical feet in one mile. Motivated and ready to go. The state of the ties is pretty rough in parts. We made it to the top! Pike's Peak got some snow earlier in the morning. Garden of the Gods from above. Jogging Barr Trail back down. Friday, May 27, 2016. Tuesday, May 24, 2016.

the campin' Johansons: Fall Colors

http://campinjohansons.blogspot.com/2016/10/fall-colors.html

Wednesday, October 5, 2016. Yesterday Yukon and I went for a hike up in the area of Mueller State Park hoping to see some fall foliage and found ourselves lucky to catch some of the remaining golden aspens with leaves still intact. The first photo is a view of Pike's Peak from Highway 24 after climbing up to about 8500 feet. The golden hues of the aspens were just brilliant, especially as they were set against the clear blue sky. This dog was made to be an excellent hiking companion.

the campin' Johansons: July 2016

http://campinjohansons.blogspot.com/2016_07_01_archive.html

Saturday, July 30, 2016. The first day the big kids and I did the 3.2-mile round trip hike to the iconic Delicate Arch. (Andria kindly hung back with Zanny while we did the hike) I was really proud of the kids for hanging in there and completing the hike. The park rates the hike as difficult and it seemed well into the 80s by 9am, with temps steadily climbing. Looking at the arch from a totally different vantage point. Nice photo by Nora of the old man and old lady. Friday, July 15, 2016. As I rounded a ...

Tuesday, August 16, 2016. First Backpacking Trip - Lost Creek Wilderness. The big kids and I had a chance to go on their first true backpacking trip last weekend. They both did really well! We went to this great wilderness area called Lost Creek, which is a convenient two hours from both Colorado Springs and Denver. There was a massive fire that burned through here back in 2002. Miraculously, it spared the vast majority of this wilderness, running right up to its eastern border. Friday, August 5, 2016.

the campin' Johansons: Platte River Trail

http://campinjohansons.blogspot.com/2016/10/platte-river-trail.html

Saturday, October 15, 2016. Yukon and I enjoyed a glorious fall hike together on Thursday, this time venturing to the Platte River Trail a little over an hour from home. The colors are starting to become a little more muted as temps dip to freezing in the mountains at night but there were just enough golden remnants to still get some nice contrasts out there. It was one of those warm fall days that make the season special. October 18, 2016 at 9:03 AM. Looks like a great hike! Running water is awesome!

Bob's Journal: Oregon Trip Part Two

http://bobsnaturejournal.blogspot.com/2015/08/oregon-trip-part-two.html

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe - John Muir. Wednesday, August 5, 2015. Oregon Trip Part Two. The halls were non stop art work. This was the door to our room, The Billy Jones Room. The artwork all around the hotel pays tribute to the former residents. On our wall was this description of Billy. More of the art in our room. A more accurate painting of Billy Jones in our room. There was a pool hall down in the basement. We saw a few deer.

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe - John Muir. Wednesday, April 29, 2015. Bighorn Canyon, Again (or SOS). With the sale of Gail's mom's home complete, we lost no time in taking to the desert. We drove to the Anza Borrego Desert early Sunday morning to revisit Bighorn Canyon. We drove a ways on a jeep road until the sand became too soft to go further. This is where we car camped. She also took these photos of a blooming cholla. The agave bloo...

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe - John Muir. Friday, August 28, 2015. Gas and Steam Engine Museum. Yesterday, I spent a couple hours wandering around the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum in nearby Vista. There are numerous buildings and sheds rambling over the 55 acres, including a blacksmith shop, a weavers building, model railroad building, stage, and grass area. The following are random pictures of things that interested me. There we...

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe - John Muir. Sunday, December 21, 2014. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Tuesday, December 2, 2014. This weekend, we went for an overnight camp out in the Anza-Borrego Desert, specifically our little corner of the desert, Pinyon Wash. We love the solitude and wildness out there. Back lit cholla is beautiful, but those hairy needles seem to jump out at you if you get too close. Evening glow and long shadows.

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe - John Muir. Thursday, June 25, 2015. Fun at the Science Museum. Here are a few phone pics from our trip to the science museum in Balboa Park this past Monday. Gail builds a. Mars lander? Soren gets honors for using the most wood - and having a cool, organic style. Nora is all concentration. Monday, June 22, 2015. James Hubbell Open House. James' mosaic touches in the kitchen. When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe - John Muir. Wednesday, June 25, 2014. We had a rather music and art filled weekend. Below are some of the high lights of the past few days. Saturday night we went to our Carlsbad Museum of Making Music for a concert by Otis Taylor, blues musician, who plays banjo and electric guitar. The library appears like The Starship Enterprise, perched on a knoll. The major never flinched as he spun and threw his baton.

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe - John Muir. Sunday, May 24, 2015. Don't We Have Fun! Gail and Susanna are really hitting it off these days! Both are nuts about dress-up and wacky fashion! On today's hike at Calavera Hills, I came upon this beautiful San Diego Gopher Snake near the top of the peak. I estimate its length at about 5 feet - nice sized! Hope you find that mate you're probably searching for! Monday, May 18, 2015. The bees were ...

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe - John Muir. Friday, October 31, 2014. It was Halloween Eve, and time to get carving. Pumpkin party! Susanna wisely wore a helmet during the lucha libre event - croquette as it has never been seen before! Enough to give one a case of coulrophobia! We all love cosplay! Saturday, October 25, 2014. When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe - John Muir. Monday, September 22, 2014. Yellowstone Trip Part 3. This final installment covers Thursday through the following Wednesday. Thursday morning, we woke to a dusting of snow and temperatures in the low 20's - quite a change from the T-shirt weather we had Monday and Tuesday! Just inside the park we stopped to watch a bull elk and his harem. A pretty, late bloomer that Gail photographed. There were...

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe - John Muir. Thursday, August 28, 2014. What first looked like several bird poops on our potted orange tree leaves turned out to be something alive and amazing. They are actually caterpillars of the beautiful giant swallowtail butterfly! Sunday, Andria and the kids came up for a few hours of play. The kids never tire of this big old plastic pool. Come to think of it, Gail and I don't either. Sunday, Paul, Su...
