Macromolecules, materials and matter!: How dyeing works by Gillian
http://mmmmatter.blogspot.com/2012/04/how-dying-works-by-gillian.html
Macromolecules, materials and matter! Thursday, 12 April 2012. How dyeing works by Gillian. Mordant comes from the French "mordre" to bite, it therefore cause the colour to 'bite' into the fabric. The most commonly used mordant dyes have hydroxyl and carboxyl groups and are negatively charged, i.e. anionic. Mordants increase the fastness of the dye since the larger molecule is now bonded to the fibre. In a nutshell, the mordant is a chemical which fixes the dye to the wool. Hunt, A, (2009). The Quilted Philosopher: December 2008
http://thequiltedphilosopher.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Musings on and photographs of quilting and quilts and how it all fits in to the big picture. December 6, 2008. Waiting . . . Well, my challenge this week was to centre the back of the yellow quilt on the top. How to go about doing so? About somehow pinning one corner of the hands panel to the place on the top where I thought it should go to be centred, then pin the other corners and adjust. Where would I lay it out to do this, though? Yes, I am a last minute person. Keep your foot on the dogs! Oh well...

Musings on and photographs of quilting and quilts and how it all fits in to the big picture. December 31, 2007. Ladybug, Ladybug, fly away home .". It worked like a dream. The latest piece on which I've used metal thread is a one "block" piece of double wedding ring using Cheryl Phillips. And Linda Pysto's method outlined in their book, " Rings That Bind. I first found out about the method through watching Kaye Wood. Back in the day I belonged to the York Heritage Quilters' Guild. Links to this post.

Musings on and photographs of quilting and quilts and how it all fits in to the big picture. February 29, 2008. Time Flies . . . I can't believe it's been almost two weeks since I last posted. Sometimes it seems as if the world just goes faster and faster while I putter around my life. Here's what Rumi says about it, via Coleman Barks (page 194 of The Essential Rumi):. In a boat down a fast-running creek,. It feels like trees on the bank. Are rushing by. What seems. To be changing around us. I played wit...

Musings on and photographs of quilting and quilts and how it all fits in to the big picture. January 12, 2009. Gosh, time goes by so quicky. I keep making a promise to myself to post here once a week at the very least, and yet life seems to always get in the way. After my last post the store called me back to say that the walking foot would cost $150. Yeowch! I found some wonderful vintage cottons at a yard sale in New York somewhere. From one peachy floral piece, I hand sewed my daughter two skirts ...

From British Columbia had displayed a wonderful winter quilt. Done in whites, creams and reds with redwork. And the yellow quilt for my daughter. I have some blocks put together for the latter and as I finish more I put up some photos.
