CAnMove Field blog: Preparing the radar for a new field season!

http://canmovefieldblog.blogspot.com/2015/05/preparing-radar-for-new-fieldseason.html

Preparing the radar for a new field season! Moving the tracking radar from Falsterbo. The renovation of the tracking radar has been ongoing for almost a year now, and is soon finished. The mobile tracking radar was first moved from the field site in Falsterbo to Ljungbyhed airfield. There we have had expert help from, among others, C-G Carlsson and Bertil Larsson to take it all apart and put it back together. On site at Ljungbyhed, emptying the old radar trailer. CAnMove Field blog: Jackdaws

http://canmovefieldblog.blogspot.com/2014/08/jackdaws.html

A group of Jackdaws and some Rooks flying towards a night roost. In a previous post I told about our new project on Jackdaws and gave some information on the biology of these birds. I also mentioned that we attached GPS-loggers to some birds. But what are GPS-loggers? How do they work? And why did we attach them to some birds? The GPS-loggers we use for the Jackdaws have another very valuable function. Using an antenna one can download the data from the distance! Written by Christina Rengefors. On 8 June...

CAnMove Field blog: Migration across Falsterbo!

http://canmovefieldblog.blogspot.com/2014/10/migration-across-falsterbo.html

This autumn I am doing field work in Falsterbo. Falsterbo is the most south-western tip of Sweden. It is one of the most important strategic bird migration sites in Europe. But what does this mean and why is this? These standardised counts started in 1973 and by now a long-term dataset is available. It shows that some species have increased a lot in this period, other have decreased a lot. The value of such long-term datasets is enormous. Written by Helena Osvath. What is it like to be a researcher?

CAnMove Field blog: From long-distance and short-distance migrants: A migratory season at Falsterbo

http://canmovefieldblog.blogspot.com/2014/11/from-long-distance-and-short-distance.html

From long-distance and short-distance migrants: A migratory season at Falsterbo. In my past blog entry I have told you about migratory bottlenecks in general, Falsterbo in particular, methods to monitor migration and the sophisticated radio-telemetry system CanMove has on the Falsterbo Peninsula. So today it is time to write about what I am actually doing there. A Robin hanging safely in a mist net. Experienced ringers can take out birds quickly and safe. A so called short-distance migrant. On a typical ...

Ecology and Wildlife Photography. Latest updates about my ecological research and wildlife photography. August 4, 2013. Stitched panorama (using Hugin) of Stickle Tarn in the Lake District. A tarn is a mountain lake or pool formed by glacial activity and there are plenty to be found in the Lake District fells! It was a hot day, so a swim in the tarn was impossible to resist! Ecology and Wildlife Photography. Latest updates about my ecological research and wildlife photography. July 1, 2013. The kittiwakes were clearly paired up but there was not an egg in sight, while there was plenty of courtship. Kittiwake – with no eggs…. The guillemots were strangely unperturbed by the herring gull in their midst. Spot the guillemot chick. There were razorbills too. Using a Lens Baby for a different take on a guillemot colony. A kestrel was on display for much of the morning.
