Lammermoore.: March 2005

So that the pale orange band is not too thin. Hwaet, I teach my students Narrative: there is the Introduction, the Complication, the Climax, the Resolution. Then, I say, you might make a story more exciting by starting with the Complication, then writing the Introduction in the form of a flashback. One little darling submitted the following:. I fell off the cliff. My wings would not work. My parents were screaming helplessly. I must fly! Then, I had a flashback.". View my complete profile.

Except that as my friend you might feel you have to tell me that everything will be all right, and as your friend I might feel I have to pretend that everything is now indeed so. This can but only increase the likelihood of fatal flying dogs. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Do not smile to yourself. Like a green mountain. With a cloud drifting across it. Words' Leaves: August 2011
http://wordsleaves.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
Out of Sheer Rage. Geoff Dyer's non-study of D. H. Lawrence is pitch-perfect. It was the only one of his books in the library when I went, and now I want to borrow the lot. I have no real interest in Lawrence - that is, no real interest in re-reading any of the novels, except out of duty mis-conceived, but this makes me want to read the letters and (maybe, perhaps), the poems. The courage of others is often astounding. Not just the courage displayed after sustaining his injuries,. Do not smile to yourself.

The Motive for Metaphor. You like it under the trees in autumn,. Because everything is half dead. The wind moves like a cripple among the leaves. And repeats words without meaning. In the same way, you were happy in spring,. With the half colors of quarter-things,. The slightly brighter sky, the melting clouds,. The single bird, the obscure moon -. The obscure moon lighting an obscure world. Of things that would never be quite expressed,. Where you yourself were not quite yourself,. The A B C of being,.

coming out of the tall grass: August 2009
http://cookiejar.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Coming out of the tall grass. Please knock on my little grey door. Monday, August 24, 2009. Ark, salt, clear, moving, utterly free. Although it is a cold evening,. Down by one of the fishhouses. An old man sits netting,. His net, in the gloaming almost invisible,. A dark purple-brown,. And his shuttle worn and polished. The air smells so strong of codfish. It makes one's nose run and one's eyes water. The five fishhouses have steeply peaked roofs. And narrow, cleated gangplanks slant up. While he waits f...

coming out of the tall grass: January 2010
http://cookiejar.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Coming out of the tall grass. Please knock on my little grey door. Saturday, January 30, 2010. My minute of silence. That and Lyra and the aleiometer in Phillip Pullman's Northern Lights trilogy - not by grace but by learning. So I'm in Cambridge, or perhaps at Cambridge, more accurately; I should be here until June; I'm reading for an MPhil in Political Thought and Intellectual History. I may have mentioned this. Friday, January 29, 2010. Matteo Ricci's world map. With China at its centre. One of the be...

Lammermoore.: June 2004
http://lammermoore.blogspot.com/2004_06_01_archive.html
So that the pale orange band is not too thin. And I'm off to England. It’s like how a wave starts out at sea: the force moving through the water is enormous, but invisible in the depths; but when it reaches the shallows before the shore, it rears up, and crashes onto the shore in a tumult of foam and noise. I’ve crashed into the moment, and am quite lost in the resultant violence. I might not post at all, so caught up in rediscovered delights; or maybe incessantly, said delights multiplied shared. I'm co...

Wishing you a keris for the new year. Was one of five things, along with a home, a singing bird, a wife and a horse, that all Javanese men believed were needed for happiness in life. Lammermoore.: Haiku.
http://lammermoore.blogspot.com/2006/10/haiku.html
So that the pale orange band is not too thin. Someone found a haiku scratched onto the surface of an LT swinging-desk-thing:. This is a haiku. Really, this is a haiku. God this haiku sucks. We thought we knew who the author was, and we went rampaging around the school to plaster him / her with kisses. View my complete profile. Coming Out of the Tall Grass. Packed away in time.
