I missed this essay. In 2001, but I think he's a bit disturbed by a basic assumption that I'm not sure I by. His argument is that modern prose is elitist and viciously separates reader from writer, mostly based on the desire of the writer to create pyrotechnic prose that critics will love and ordinary readers hate.
