Capabilities Digest: A project in the works
http://capabilitiesdigest.blogspot.com/2010/12/project-in-works.html
Helping to raise awareness of Capability Based Security. Tuesday, December 21, 2010. A project in the works. I'm putting together a project to implement CABsec on a small scale. I find myself wanting to play with an idea that doesn't seem have any current implementations. so I'm recruiting a few friends to get it coded up, and boiled down to something that might be interesting to others. Capabilities Digest: Genode
http://capabilitiesdigest.blogspot.com/2012/06/genode.html
Helping to raise awareness of Capability Based Security. Saturday, June 16, 2012. I've just come across Genode. Which looks like it may offer a reasonably quick route to capability based security for all of us. They are looking to self-host development ("eat our own dog food" as the term goes) by the end of 2012. It builds on the work of L4 and all the other microkernels, providing a way to run on 8 different microkernels in total. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Google: capability object - past week.
Capabilities Digest: Why ACL/UIC based security is futile, the IED example.
http://capabilitiesdigest.blogspot.com/2012/05/why-acluic-based-security-is-futile-ied.html
Helping to raise awareness of Capability Based Security. Saturday, May 26, 2012. Why ACL/UIC based security is futile, the IED example. I wrote this on Slashdot in reply to comments about the relative security of Windows vs Linux. This is like arguing about the odds of an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) killing you based on the brand of vehicle you're driving. If you have territory which is denied to your enemies, you don't have IEDs at all. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Capabilities Digest: Cabsec by example... the fun game
http://capabilitiesdigest.blogspot.com/2010/03/cabsec-by-example-fun-game.html
Helping to raise awareness of Capability Based Security. Tuesday, March 16, 2010. Cabsec by example. the fun game. There is a fun game called Bubble Breaker. I like to play it while I'm waiting for things to compile, format, etc. but it has one big problem. it plays sounds. and doesn't provide a mute. I have a program that I trust, except for the annoying sounds. This is the heart of cabsec. The ability to explicitly supply capabilities to a program, instead of having to manually block off everything.
Capabilities Digest: Less talk, more code
http://capabilitiesdigest.blogspot.com/2009/12/less-talk-more-code.html
Helping to raise awareness of Capability Based Security. Thursday, December 3, 2009. Less talk, more code. I can blog and talk for the rest of my life, and I doubt it would matter much. The fact is that it's very hard to wrap your mind around something as different as capabilities without some good old fashioned examples to play with. So I've written one, using Google App Engine. Have fun. http:/ myfs.appspot.com/. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Google: capability object - past week.

--Mike--: Hand over your purse or wallet to continue this transaction
http://mikewarot.blogspot.com/2015/01/hand-over-your-purse-or-wallet-to.html
An attempt to push the world in a better direction. Monday, January 05, 2015. Hand over your purse or wallet to continue this transaction. Imagine if you had to surrender your wallet or purse in order to buy a pack of gum at the local store. so the clerk could remove the appropriate amount of money, then hand it back to you at the end of the transaction. When you run a program, browse a web page, open a PDF file, your computer's antivirus attempts to guess if the action is safe. and most of the time ...

An attempt to push the world in a better direction. Sunday, March 16, 2014. Facebook jumps the shark. There are lots of reasons not to like Facebook, but until recently, the network effects of my social graph overcame them. They made it a pain in the ass, but I could sign in, reset the sort order (on a pseudo-random basis it would go to the new "omelette" (or top news) mode). I go there to see what people are doing. how can I ever be "done" if I can't have a rational view of who is doing what? Bill Gates...
--Mike--: Windows needs a grenade sump
http://mikewarot.blogspot.com/2015/01/windows-needs-grenade-sump.html
An attempt to push the world in a better direction. Sunday, January 04, 2015. Windows needs a grenade sump. In warfare, you dig defensive positions to incorporate a grenade sump, so that an inbound grenade can be directed to a place where it will result in minimum harm. There is no equivalent of a grenade sump in Windows. nowhere you can stick a program that you don't trust, then wait and see if it blows up. Sunday, January 04, 2015. --Mike--: On Cyberwar
http://mikewarot.blogspot.com/2015/07/on-cyberwar.html
An attempt to push the world in a better direction. Thursday, July 30, 2015. If your operating system isn't smart enough to require a list of resources to feed a program you want it to run, you lose. If you built your entire civilization on such a stupid foundation, you lose. Anyone smarter than that can wipe you off the face of the earth, unless you can survive long enough to correct your deeply embedded mistake. Thursday, July 30, 2015. An attempt to push the world in a better direction. Tuesday, January 06, 2015. What to do while we wait for secure computing. The problem with secure computing is that it is an obscure design feature that has to be written in at the base level of an operating system, as it effects all subsequent layers. so it is going to take quite a bit of time and effort for people to get it done, once awareness is raised enough to stimulate a demand. Let's be careful out there. Tuesday, January 06, 2015. A PowerBox is...

An attempt to push the world in a better direction. Friday, July 12, 2013. A radical idea about ending lives with dignity for Indiana. Once you passed admission criteria, you'd have a waiting period of at least 3 days, maybe a week or a month. whatever isn't entirely cruel. to stay in a hospice type atmosphere. During this time, you're free to leave for any reason, with no repercussions. After your waiting period, you'd then be eligible for euthanasia, and burial in accordance with your wishes. To be abl...

An attempt to push the world in a better direction. Tuesday, December 17, 2013. I want to stack the following layers of code into a coherent collection of things that actually work. Genode (A capability based security, which uses an L4 trusted kernel). Linux (which can run already as an app in Genode). WINE (yeah, I want to run Windows apps). I'm going to have to deal with QT5 for GUI elements, and my choice of programming languages to try to tie things together. Who is with me? Tuesday, December 17, 2013.

An attempt to push the world in a better direction. Friday, July 11, 2014. Tesla was smarter than even the conspiracy folks think. here's why. Using high frequency RF energy, the HAARP project is able to modify the conductivity of areas of the ionosphere to lower frequencies (and even DC). if you did this in a manner to cause the conductive area to shift back and forth, you could turn the entire ionosphere into a MASER. It wasn't a replacement for power lines. it was way, way better than that!

Helping to raise awareness of Capability Based Security. Sunday, October 11, 2015. The CABSEC fork in the road. Computer security is a mess, and to fix it, I believe that Linux, and indeed the entire open source stack, needs to get forked. I humbly suggest we call this the .CABSEC fork, so it is obvious to anyone who sees it what it is. Cabsec is the embodiment of the principle of least privilege. Not trusting your applications means you have to change things, mostly in terms of the user interface, the c...
